Buy Local, with Mattresses

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

CMGAs a community, we’re not just focused on “Made in America,” to help support jobs and products made in our own country, but we’re paying more attention to buying things made by our own neighbors. When it comes to food, it’s a great way to get things fresh and in season. For restaurants and local shops, it’s a good way to support local merchants and keep the money that you’re spending in the local economy.

But did you know that you can also buy local when it comes to home furnishings? It’s probably no surprise, since North Carolina has long been known for its high-quality furniture manufacturing. One of the many companies right in our own backyard is Carolina Mattress Guild, located in High Point.

Family owned and operated, the company was started in 1991 by Neal and Kathy Grigg, and they are still hands-on with the business today. They employee about 100 people in their two locations, in Thomasville and Orlando, Fla. “We are committed to all of our employees, and feel we are helping to support not just them, but also their families, and help make the local economy strong.”

Carolina Mattress Guild produces about 80 different mattress sets, from economically priced selections to high-end, luxury sets. But no matter what price range the mattress is in, all are made with high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship.

“We believe there is quite a bit of craftsmanship here in the Thomasville area,” Kathy said. “Making home furnishings has been a proud part of North Carolina’s heritage, and our associates really take pride in their work, which is something that is seen in the final product.”

The Made in America philosophy is also important, and all components of mattresses from Carolina Mattress Guild are sourced either locally or from somewhere in the United States. No part of these mattresses has been made in another country and imported.

Neal and Kathy not only support local businesses and the families that work there, they also have a strong commitment to sustainable practices and taking care of Mother Earth. To that end they have introduced some unique products to the mattress markets, the Natural Living and Nature’s Image lines, made with sustainable and all-natural materials including an all-natural latex foam cover and bamboo ticking. They are also mindful of their own operations, recycling materials and using sustainable practices whenever possible.

“We just try to be good neighbors and good citizens,” Kathy said. “We want to help the Earth keep restoring and regenerating, to maintain the beauty for future generations.”

Come into Bowen Furniture, another locally owned business, to check out these mattresses in Winston-Salem for yourself. You can call or email us for more information at 336-765-1360 or

Furniture for the Next Generation

Monday, May 12th, 2014

GabriellaLet’s face it, kids today approach life with different expectations than we did just 20 years ago. They’re living in a world where phones serve as cameras, watches can be used as phones and cars come fully loaded with TVs. So it’s only natural that they would expect a bed to be more than a place to put a mattress. And they’re right! With the great designs in Smartstuff, a furniture line produced by Universal just for kids, every piece of furniture has something unique to make it more than what appears at first glance.

My favorite is the bed with the built-in nightlight. Who doesn’t spend time reading before going to sleep? This light makes it easy to cram in a few extra chapters or just play some more games on that tablet before heading to bed. Other cool furniture with extra features include:

  • A nightstand with a charging station
  • A dresser with a drop-down drawer perfect for housing a Play Station4, Xbox 360
  • A mirror with a hidden, slide-out jewelry organizer

The products also come with some cool extras that appeal to both kids and parents, including a folding board in the dressers to help with laundry, an ergonomic guide with the desks, a star chart with the bunkbeds, and a map of the world with each hutch.

The beds, desks, dressers and other furniture products from Smartstuff are fun for kids, but they have qualities that appeal to parents as well. Every piece of furniture meets industry safety standards. And on top of that, they are strong and durable, made of good-quality materials.

No matter how well behaved a child is, we know they’re going to be rough on the furniture. The manufacturers at Universal have this covered, with beds that bolt together instead of the common sliding groove, plywood slats that are stronger than wood and bunkbed ladder steps that are 9 inches wide and grooved to improve traction.

If you’re looking for furniture to update your child’s room or provide for their apartment as you send them off to college, stop by Bowen Furniture today and take a look at the Smartstuff line. We have some great pieces on our showroom floor, and we can order others to get you the exact look you’re going for. Visit our website, or email us at or call 336-765-1360.

5 Tips to Make Mattress Shopping Easy

Thursday, May 1st, 2014

ceWhen is the last time you went mattress shopping? If the answer to that question is when you bought your bedroom furniture, then you’re probably due for a new mattress, especially if it’s been more than 10 years. Unlike dining room tables and desks, mattresses are a product that get used every single day, and wear out over time. If you’re waking up with aches and pains, then it’s high time to look for something new, and Bowen Furniture has a large selection of top brands and locally made mattresses to choose from, including Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Nature’s Image and Carolina Mattress Guild.

Here are a few tips for your next mattress shopping expedition:

* Firmness is a matter of opinion. For years people said that firm mattresses were best to reduce back pain, but that hasn’t been proved with research. What you’re looking for is a mattress that provides support for your spine while allowing give and take for the natural curve of your body. A well-made mattress will provide the support you need. Then whether you choose soft, firm or ultra-firm, it’s up to you.

* Allow plenty of time. Shopping for a mattress isn’t like running to the store for a gallon of milk. You will need to look at your options, test them out and then make the purchase and arrange for delivery, and you don’t want to be rushed into make a decision you’ll regret.

* Be prepared to lie down on the mattresses. It’s very important to test out a mattress to make sure it’s the right fit for you. Wear slip on shoes so you can get on the beds in the showroom easily, and lie down for 10-15 minutes. This is where it’s great to come with someone, whether it’s your spouse or a friend, so you don’t feel so self-conscious lying in bed in public. And shopping at Bowen Furniture makes it an even nicer experience. Their mattresses are all in a room to themselves, so you won’t be subject to the foot traffic of people coming in to look at sofas and dining tables.

* Talk to David, Steve, Garry and Tricia. Everyone on staff at Bowen Furniture is very knowledgeable about the different brands and how each is made. Especially if you haven’t shopped for a mattress in a few years, you will want to ask them for information about the different options, such as memory foam, gel and hybrid mattresses that combine inner springs with foam.

* Come with a budget in mind. You don’t have to break the bank to get a good mattress. With the wide variety of options at Bowen Furniture, you are sure to find a great quality mattress in a price that fits your budget.
