Nothing Says Spring Like a Slipcover

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

A910_1-435-19RMThink of the grand old historic homes of Charleston, South Carolina. When the first warm days of spring come, the heavy oriental rugs are taken out to the cleaners, to be replaced sisal floor coverings, and the dark colors of the furniture are instantly brightened up with light cotton slipcovers. It’s a tradition in home décor that has been in place for generations in this stately town.

But you don’t have to live on Rainbow Row to have a fresh new look each spring. Why not try a slipcover of your own?

If the word slipcover makes you cringe, it’s worth a look at the new options. Gone are those vinyl, sticky couch protectors that stuck to your sweaty legs during a forced visit to your great-aunt’s home. Today’s slipcovers are form fitting and as beautiful as they are functional. And even better, they are easily removed and cleaned, making your sofa look as good as new with minimal effort.

With tried and true furniture manufacturers such as Kincaid and Rowe offering many different styles, you will soon see that slipcovers aren’t what they used to be.

As we settle into the hot days of summer, lighter fabrics and colors not only brighten up the house, but also help things feel cooler. Come into Bowen Town & Country Furniture in Winston-Salem to explore your options. You’ll be amazed at how just one sofa can transform the look and feel of your entire home!

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

e547cb1a0f064e07cc225a0be171ff01It doesn’t take an expensive research study to tell us what we can observe on our own: we are all much happier, healthier people after a good night’s sleep. But with our busy lives and overly hectic schedules, who has time for sleep? When we do finally crash into bed, often it’s to toss and turn and sleep fitfully, only to wake up aching and grumpy the next day.

Here are a few tips to help you get better sleep, something that can only help improve your attitude and performance.

1. Stick to a schedule. Yes, it’s tempting to stay up late on weekends. But the best way to ensure good sleep is to keep your body on a schedule. It’s okay to break the rules now and then, but overall try to stick to the same bedtime and wake up time on weekends that you do during the work week.

2. Create a bedtime ritual. That same trick that we used on our children when they were babies has the same calming effect on us as adults. You might not take a lavender bath and be read a story each night, but the basic idea holds true. Set up your own bedtime ritual, whether it’s winding down with a cup of herbal tea or relaxing in a hot shower, and you will be more apt to go to sleep once you get to bed.

3. Don’t take work to bed with you. Leave the laptops and phones in a different room. Added stress contributes to insomnia, and it is nowhere near relaxing to find out something went wrong with your last project or your boss expects a total revision of your work on her desk the next day, all right before you’re getting ready to turn your light out.

4. Get exposure to natural light during the day. Working in an office cubicle with fluorescent lighting can wreak havoc on our natural circadian rhythms. If possible, get outside for lunch or make time to take a walk during the day so your brain will be ready for sleep when nighttime comes.

5. Make sure your bed is comfortable. If you’re waking up with aches and pains, it might just be time for a new mattress. A good bed is the key element to a good night’s sleep, and investing in a good-quality mattress is worth it to improve your health and state of mind. If you find you’re in need of a new mattress to improve your sleep hygiene, come to Bowen Town & Country Furniture today and talk to our sleep experts.

A Great Team of Experts

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

aboutBowenLet’s face it, we live in furniture country. There are showrooms full of furniture in all price ranges and styles everywhere you turn. But what sets Bowen Town & Country apart from the others is a magnificent team of people. When you walk in the door, you feel like you’ve come home to family. Together, the staff has over 200 years of experience working with furniture and serving people in Winston-Salem and beyond. If you don’t already know them, we’d like to take a minute to introduce you to the people you will see when you come in to shop.

David Paff:
David has been with us for 28 years, working in all facets of the business and now as general manager. His knowledge of the industry and eye for quality is impeccable. Plus, his years of working with customers and learning the tastes of the people of Winston-Salem and its surrounding areas have helped tune him into what the community’s needs are when talking with manufacturers and attending furniture shows. When not walking the floor of the store, you might see him running through town. David enjoys participating in 5k and 10k races, and has even run a half marathon.

Charlene Owens:
You might not see Charlene when you visit, her position as Controller has her mostly in the office, but after 23 years with Bowen Town & Country, she feels just as immersed in the furniture world as Scott Bowen himself! And believe it or not, Charlene takes her work home with her. Literally, that is! “My favorite piece of furniture is our Stressless Chair by Ekornes. I sit in it after work and feel the stress ebbing away,” Charlene says.

Garry Crist:
Garry has worked with Scott for 16 years, and over the course of that time a lot has changed in the furniture industry. Luckily, Garry and his fellow associates stay on top of all the changes and make sure to pass on the exciting new things to all of their customers. “One thing that has improved over the years is the fabric,” Garry says. “Many upholstery companies are using fabrics that are much more durable and have built-in stain resistance. This makes things much more appealing to families with children, pets, or both!”

Tricia Fox:
With just close to two years at Bowen Town & Country under her belt, Tricia is the newbie on the team, but she isn’t new to the furniture world. Fifteen years in the business has given her a lot of experience to draw on when helping customers pick out just the right piece of furniture for their home or office. Looking for a new look but not ready to invest in a lot of new furniture? Tricia’s advice is to buy one new piece of upholstery. “A new chair or especially a couch can immediately make over a room,” Tricia says. “We have so many styles to choose from, all with many different types of upholstery as well, that you can easily pick something that reflects your own personal style.”

Steve Rice:
Steve has been with Bowen for 26 years, and as you can imagine he’s heard almost everything from customers. But when asked what he hears the most, he said 90 percent of the time people come in and say, “I’m just looking.” For Steve, that’s a perfect opportunity to strike up a conversation! Whether you’re looking to buy a new bed or couch or just want to see what Bowen Town & Country has new out on the sales floor, talking to Steve will immediately help you feel better informed about your choices and educated on the different styles and types of furniture available, either on the sales floor or ready to be ordered from the manufacturer. “As a family owned business, we all go out of our way to make the customer welcome and feel at home,” Steve says. “That’s one of the best benefits of working with and doing business with Bowen Town & Country.”
