Forget the Futon: Equip Your Apartment in Style

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

Bellamy_Collection_Banners_3August signals back to school time, but for parents of college-aged kids that means something completely different than buying some notebooks and a lunch box. Many times going back to college means making a more permanent move out of the parents’ house and into an apartment. And at larger colleges and universities, while dorms are always an option, kids like the freedom that comes with an apartment. But what they don’t often realize is the responsibility that comes with it!

As parents, we can help them out by getting them started out on the right foot. And Bowen Town and Country Furniture is the perfect place to start. Whether you’re outfitting an apartment for a college student, or you’re just looking for some nice furniture for a smaller space, we’ve got the perfect pieces to fit your décor.

* Smartstuff from Universal.
Perfect for kids going off to college or even for your kids staying home, this line of furniture is not only stylish, it has additional features that give it a “cool” factor that appeals to the younger generation. A built in reading light in the bed, an ergonomics tip sheet in the desk and folding boards in the dresser help kids help themselves.

* Rowe sofas.
This is one of our favorite sofa lines for a reason. The company offers so many styles, sizes and fabrics that you basically design your own sofa. The “small stuff” collection is perfect for apartment living.

* A Good Mattress.
For most kids, bad backs aren’t a problem, so we don’t give much thought to their mattress. But everyone needs a good mattress to get a good night’s sleep. Luckily that doesn’t mean an expensive mattress. Come into our showroom and let our staff help you find the perfect mattress to get your young adult off to a great start, at a great price.

From beds to desks to unique chairs, we have just what you need to outfit your apartment. Stop by today and have a look at what’s new at Bowen Town & Country Furniture.

Factory Man

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

18774017Did you know that a furniture company from right here in our local region is getting noticed by Hollywood A-listers? That’s right! Factory Man hit shelves in mid-July, and right away the book about John Basset III, the CEO of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company, started getting rave reviews, even including a tweet from Tom Hanks. Written by Beth Macy, a journalist who has spent most of her career covering the ins and outs of life in Roanoke, the book chronicles Bassett’s fight to keep his factory going amidst the increasing globalization of the furniture industry.

Here in the Triad of North Carolina, we are very familiar with the challenges the furniture industry has faced. From High Point and Thomasville to Hickory and beyond, people have lost their jobs, factories have closed down and companies have dissolved as the work that generations of craftsmen did for years moved overseas, where labor and materials were cheap.

Vaughan-Bassett wasn’t immune to the influx of imports, and that company suffered through some tough years in the 1980s as well. But Macy documents how John Bassett’s tenacity led a fight against China that ultimately kept his company alive, and today they employ over 700 people in factories based in Galax, Va., and Elkin, N.C.

That commitment to the local economy and producing quality, American-made products is exactly what has made Bowen Town & Country Furniture and Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company great partners for many years. We are proud to have their beautiful furniture on our showroom floor. There are plenty of great pieces you can check out and take home right away. We can also order straight from the factory to get you just the right piece for your home.

Not only does Vaughan-Bassett manufacture furniture right here in our region, most of the furniture the company manufacturers consists of wood solids and wood veneers grown and harvested in the Southeast. The furniture you see on our showroom floor is made from the same pine, oak, maple, cherry, ash, poplar, birch and beech trees that you see when you walk through the woods in the foothills of North Carolina and Virginia. Even more impressive is the company’s One for One program, a commitment to plant a tree for each one harvested, which ensures our beautiful forests will remain lush and green for generations to come.

Stop by Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see for yourself just what quality, American-made furniture looks like. When you purchase a piece of furniture from our store, manufactured by Vaughan Bassett, you not only will add to the beauty of your home, you can also feel proud that you’re supporting the local economy.

Tips to Keep Your Leather Looking Great

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

Handcrafted Furniture by Hancock and MooreThere’s no question that a nice piece of leather furniture can instantly add class to your décor. The elegance and comfort of leather can’t be beat. But many people shy away from it either because they feel it is too expensive, or not durable enough for everyday use. Both of these myths can be proved wrong. Leather furniture, especially good quality furniture such as that made by Hancock and Moore, might have a higher price point than comparable upholstery furniture. But unlike cloth, leather can last a lifetime. It even looks better as it ages, as the wear and use brings out its natural patina. So in the long run you are getting your money’s worth.

Leather is also very durable, after all, its original use was to protect an animal from the elements. Kids and dogs are no more of a worry around leather furniture than they are any other piece of furniture in your house.

And finally, leather furniture is relatively easy to take care of. Follow these simple steps, and your leather will look as good as the day you bought it, if not better, for years to come.

* Wipe your furniture with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust, and use a vacuum for the crevices.

* Once every 6 to 12 months, use a leather conditioner to help protect the furniture and keep it clean. We recommend Guardsmen Leather Conditioner at Bowen Town & Country Furniture.

* For the inevitable spill, just grab an absorbent, dry cloth to wipe up the mess. If you need to use something moist, make sure to use as little moisture as possible. And never use regular household cleaners on leather. They could cause more damage than the spill.

* As leather ages, you might begin to see small cracks. Just use a microfiber cloth to buff them out.

* Placement of your furniture is just as important as regular maintenance. Keep leather out of direct sunlight to keep it looking nice for longer.

No matter what you’re looking for, whether it’s a modern-style leather recliner from our Stressless line or a more traditional sofa from Hancock and Moore, we have the furniture to fit your style at Bowen Town and Country. And by following the tips above, you will protect your investment and enjoy your new leather furniture for years to come.

Sleep Cool with Tempur-Breeze

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

9175-TEM_Breeze_Landing_Page_v2-1024x875There’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep. And for many of us, that means snuggling into some warm covers and a comfortable bed. But sometimes, no matter how carefully you set the thermostat or arrange the quilts, you still wake up in the middle of the night hot.

We sell a lot of mattresses at Bowen Town & Country Furniture, and one of our popular lines is the Tempur-Pedic mattress. These mattresses are great for absorbing motion and fitting to your body. But like many memory foam mattresses, they can sometimes “sleep hot.”

Now that’s not a problem, thanks to the new Tempur-Breeze technology. This new feature on the three most popular mattresses helps keep you cool all through the night with a three-layer set-up.

Layer 1: The Cover. Cool to the touch, this special material helps wick away moisture and heat from the body, keeping you comfortable right where you sleep.

Layer 2: The Comfort Layer. This section is made out of a cooling material that moves excess heat away from the body.

Layer 3: Climate Material. This proprietary technology from Tempur-Pedic is designed to receive heat and channel it away, ensuring a cool night for even the hottest sleepers.

We are excited to have this new line of Tempur-Breeze mattresses at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. Come in today to check them out. Our knowledgeable sales staff will help you find the mattress that’s right for you, and before you know it you will be getting the best sleep of your life.
