Get a Good Night’s Sleep for Better Driving

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

tempThere are so many reasons to get a good night’s sleep that it’s hard to count them all. It’s better for your health, decreases your stress level and helps you perform your daily tasks better. But did you know having a good night’s sleep also makes you a better driver?

Earlier this month, the National Sleep Foundation promoted Drowsy Driver Prevention Week to help raise awareness of the safety issues facing American drivers.

  • 60 percent of drivers say they have driven while feeling drowsy in the past year.
  • 1 out of 8 crashes that require hospitalization were due to drowsiness.
  • 1 out of 6 deadly accidents are a direct result of a drowsy driver.

And the scary thing is, these numbers might be an underestimation, as there is no test officials can give at the scene of an accident to determine whether a driver was drowsy or not.

The best way to protect yourself and others is to get a good night’s sleep. And one way to do that is to make sure you have a great mattress!

The rumor going around that you should get a new mattress every 8 years isn’t exactly true. A well-made mattress will last longer than that. But if you wake up tired after getting a full 7-9 hours of sleep, or your mattress is showing physical signs of wear and tear, such as sagging and straining, you might be ready to shop for a mattress.

The expert sales team at Bowen Town & Country Furniture is more than ready to help you make this important purchase. They can help find the right type of mattress for you and one that fits your budget. Gone are the days when you had to have a firm mattress to ensure a good night’s sleep and no back pain. And you also don’t have to break the bank to get a mattress that’s well-made and comfortable.

We have a lot of different options, including Sealy and the new cool comfort technology in Temper-pedic’s new Temper-Breeze line.

Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see some of the great choices available in mattresses. Pick one out, and you’ll thank us after your first good night’s sleep!

Embrace the Fall Palette

Thursday, November 13th, 2014

banner_4There’s something that fascinates me every year, and that is the fact that even though the temperatures are really about the spring during the spring and the fall, the bright pink, yellow and green shirts and sweaters I wore during April and May just don’t seem to work well in October and November.

This fall, the trendy colors range from the expected to the unexpected. You’ll see muted dark greens, grays and plums, but you’ll also find royal blue and a mustard yellow added in the mix. Check out all the trendy colors at the blog

The same is true in our homes. Color plays a large part in our décor, and while we can’t change the color of our walls every few months, we can definitely get the atmosphere feeling a little more appropriate with accent pieces like throw pillows, decorative blankets and flower arrangements.

Another way to change the look of your room without having to go through a complete makeover is to change the slipcover on your couch. Don’t have a slipcovered couch? Now is the perfect time to buy one! Come into our showroom at Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see some of the options available.

Today’s slipcover is definitely not that slippery, loose-fitting protector from our grandmother’s generation. These days you have to look twice (or maybe three times) to even be able to tell if a couch is sporting a slipcover. The advantage to slipcovers includes lengthening the life of you couch by providing protection, ease in cleaning, and of course, the ability to change the color or type of fabric to update your room’s look practically effortlessly.

One of our favorite manufacturers of slipcovered couches is C.R. Lane. With a variety of styles, from sleek and minimalist to curvy and inviting, they offer a variety of couches and chairs to appeal to any taste.

Another company to look into is Four Seasons, which puts and emphasis on slipcovers to help give the customer what they’re looking for. Most collections come in sofa, loveseat, chair, chair 1/2, sleepers, sectionals and chaises, giving customers a full line to look to when it comes to slipcovers.

Make sure your house is ready for fall and holiday entertaining by doing more than just putting a few pumpkins on the porch. Come to Town & Country Furniture to check out your available options and get your home ready for fall.  Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

Get Your Table Ready for Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

439_301RS_Natural_WFM13If you tell your kids to set the table, are they likely to head to the living room and put forks out on the coffee table? Let’s face it, most of the time our dining room is a pretty lonely place. We tend to eat in front of the TV or gathered around the island in the kitchen. But there are sometimes when it’s nice to set a pretty table, complete with the good china and a nice tablecloth, and Thanksgiving is one of those times. After all, it’s a holiday that pretty much centers around a big meal!

Is your table ready for Thanksgiving? Is it big enough to comfortably seat Grandma and Aunt Sally and all the nieces and nephews? Do you have enough chairs to go around? If you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year but are still eating dinner off a card table, come visit us at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. We have a large selection of beautiful, American-made dining room tables that will instantly add class and elegance to your home, and will provide the perfect atmosphere for a family Thanksgiving meal.

Check out the designs from these furniture makers for a taste of what’s available.

Century Furniture. Not just American made, but locally made, with factories just up the road from us in Hickory, N.C. From round drop-leaf tables to longer rectangular tables with leaves to make them even longer, you’re sure to find something that will fit your family, whether it’s an intimate dinner for two or a big family feast.

Palettes by Winesburg. Made in the heartland of America in Dundee, Ohio, one of the things that sets this company apart is its unique use of materials. Show off your own personal style with a dining room table made with granite, one of the most durable stones, or zinc, which is virtually stain resistant.

Gat Creek. Choose a style, then customize it to fit your own needs. Pick the stain, the type of wood, hardware and even leg options. Each piece is made from start to finish by a talented craftsman in West Virginia.

Protecting Your Furniture

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

30H_304TopDtl_0310There’s just something about candlelight on a chilly, dark November evening that warms and brightens the furniture and room. It’s one of the small comforts that we all like to indulge in this time of year. And candles aren’t the only thing that will be coming out now that the weather is colder. Mugs full of hot chocolate, flavored coffee and warm apple cider are a great way to warm up. Maybe you enjoy a warm drink wrapped in a blanket reading the paper in your favorite chair, or you’re paying bills in the evening at the dining room table and have your hot drink to keep you company.

Whether it’s candles or cups of liquid, they both can be dangerous for your precious furniture. Here are a few easy ideas to protect your tables and chairs, especially during the next couple of months when so many of us will be entertaining guests. Let’s face it, our guests aren’t always as careful with our furniture as we’d like them to be!

* Find some nice tablecloths and runners that you like for this season, and make sure to use them. It’s hard not to let a little wax fly when blowing out candles, but if you have them set out decoratively on a runner, more than likely the wax will hit the material and not your wood.

* You know all those coasters you have sitting in your china cabinet? Get them out! Having coasters easily available and clearly visible will encourage people to use them without you having to rush in and put a coaster under a drink, looking like an uptight host.

* Consider a table pad. My grandmother had one made for her dining room table, and it is still pulled out every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas. With a tablecloth on top you never know the difference, and this way we don’t have to worry about passing the trivets with every single warm dish at the holidays.

Even if you take plenty of precautions, accidents happen. An overzealous child blows out a candle with wax landing on both your coffee table and your couch, or happy guests stay and talk so long that the condensation from their iced tea glasses soaks straight through your tablecloth to the dining room table. Don’t worry, we have some tips that will help you out.

Removing Wax

  • To get wax off either wood or upholstery, first let it dry. Trying to wipe up warm wax will only make it spread and enlarge the problem area.
  • Once cool, scrape off the wax with a dull butter knife or credit card.
  • For wood, the next step is to clean the area with oil soap, and you should be good as new.
  • For upholstery, heat an iron to medium and iron over the spot with paper towels between the upholstery and your iron. When the paper towel has soaked up the color replace it immediately and keep ironing until all the color from the upholstery has been absorbed into a paper towel.

Removing Water Stains

  • You can use either mayonnaise or Vaseline for your first go at white watermarks on wood furniture. The hope is that the oily substance will displace the water.
  • If the above doesn’t work, put a small amount of toothpaste on a cloth and rub it. The toothpaste creates an abrasive to remove the watermark.
  • After either method, wax the furniture with a clean, soft cloth, then come back later and buff it until it shines.
