Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

cr laineCR Laine creates inspiring upholstered furniture through innovative STYLE. COMFORT. and COLOR.

Environmental Statement – CR Laine is committed to preserving the resources of our world for future generations. It is our goal to minimize the environmental impacts of our company through the continual improvement of waste reduction and use of sustainable practices.

Construction – At CR Laine, artisans in our Hickory, North Carolina facility have created the best in customized, bench-crafted upholstery since 1958. We utilize new processes and equipment while holding true to time-tested premium construction features, including:

Frames are constructed using 5/4″ or thicker kiln-dried hardwoods and engineered hardwoods with fitted joints that have been glued and doweled twice then reinforced with angled corner blocks for structural integrity.

Rows of 8-way hand tied double cone steel coil springs positioned within the frame are supported by a platform of poly webbing and steel bands. Artisans then tie each coil to the frame with premium no-squeak twine at eight separate points creating CR Laine’s signature comfortable seating.

Standard seat cushions are constructed with high resiliency soy based foam that is wrapped in fiber and encased in a soft fabric ticking. This reduces abrasion and helps fabric wear longer. Loose back cushions are baffled to hold the filling in place for long lasting comfort.

Hand-cut, hand-sewn, and hand-tailored in America, CR Laine artisans build your upholstery one at a time aligning fabric patterns from top-to-bottom and side-to-side with seamless continuity.

Personalize any exposed wood with our selection of wood stains and multi-application finishes. You can also choose from any Benjamin Moore paint color.

6 Stress-Relief Tips for Tax Time

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

IMG reclinersLet’s face it. Just looking at the calendar in April can cause our stress levels to rise. That April 15 date is looming, when we all have to account to Uncle Sam and for many of us, pay up a little more. Even if you’re one of the lucky ones getting a refund, finding all the documentation and filling out the forms is stressful.

We’ve compiled a list of some great ways to relieve stress, to help you out now during tax season and other times during the year. They’re all easy to do and have you feeling relaxed in no time!

  1. Just Breathe. It might seem simple, but taking a few minutes to do a deep-breathing exercise has been shown to slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure. Close your eyes, sit up straight, and slowly inhale, taking air in all the way down to your abdomen. Then exhale just as slowly, letting all that stress escape with your breath through your mouth.
  2. Practice Progressive Relaxation. This one takes the breathing a step further to concentrate on relaxing your muscles. Lay down flat and make sure your clothing is comfortable. Contract the muscles in your left foot, count to ten, then release. Do the same for your right foot, and progressively move up your body, one muscle group at a time, legs, hands, and arms. When you’re finished, you’ll feel as light as air.
  3. Chew Gum. Right up there with breathing, this is pretty easy. Studies have shown that chewing gum reduces cortisol levels, the chemical that causes us to feel stressed.
  4. Talk to Someone. Pick up the phone and call a friend or relative, or meet up with a friend or your spouse for lunch. Sharing what’s going on in your day is a great way to get things off your shoulders, and maybe even get some valuable feedback.
  5. Get some Exercise. Whether it’s a walk with the dog, throwing Frisbee with your kids or just taking a break from your office chair to walk up and down some steps, getting moving is a great way to relieve stress.
  6. Sit in a Recliner! Yes, leave it to a furniture store to include a chair as a stress relief. But when it comes to the chairs from IMG or Ekornes, we know first-hand that just the act of sitting down can relieve stress. These collections are designed to fit the human body, with neck and lumbar support that helps you relax from the moment you sit in the chair. Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to give it a try. Once you sit in one, you’ll never want another chair.

Think Green in Home Décor

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

gat creekEarth Day celebrates its 45th anniversary this year on April 22, and that milestone has a lot of people talking about our environment. We’ve come a long way since the first Earth Day in 1970, when cities were so polluted that you could hardly see the sun in the summer months and rivers were green and filled with trash. Earth Day initiatives have raised awareness to the point where we are all interested in making the world a cleaner, safer place for us and future generations.

We are all familiar with the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle mantra and dutifully recycle newspapers and plastic bottles while paying attention to our energy and water use. But there is always room for improvement in reducing our carbon footprint, especially in our own homes. One way to do that is by paying attention to the environmental practices of the companies that manufacture the furniture we purchase, and buying products that are made with organic, recycled or sustainable materials.

Here at Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we are proud to work with many manufacturers that stand by strict sustainability and environmental practices, working to maintain our beautiful hardwood forests, reduce waste and decrease pollution. Here are just a few examples of what we’ve found among our manufacturers.

Vaughn-Bassett has created a One for One program, where they donate seedlings to the Virginia Forestry Department to re-plant the trees cut to be used to manufacture furniture. Since the program’s inception in 2007, the company has donated more than 1 million seedlings.

Kincaid Furniture Company is certified Sustainable by Design by the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA), a program put in place to help manufacturers maintain strong, proactive environmental programs.

Century Furniture is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which encourages sustainable forestry practices. The company is also committed to reducing its environmental impact through conservation and recycling.

Gat Creek uses locally sourced materials to cut down on the carbon footprint made by transportation practices, supports responsible management of forests and diligently tracks its energy use and waste disposal.

Thanks to an industry-wide commitment to reducing manufacturer’s environmental impact, you can shop with confidence, knowing that many of your favorite brands are committed to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see some of our beautiful pieces of furniture, and our knowledgeable staff can help guide you in making sure your purchases help “green up” your home.
