Amish Traditions: A Hard Working, Talented People

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

amish furnitureDriving through Amish country, whether it’s in the populated Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, or the less dense areas of Ohio and Indiana, you almost feel like you’ve taken a time machine into the past about 200 years. The sturdy, white clapboard farmhouses are almost identical, with well-kept kitchen gardens in the side yard, and a clothesline full of handmade dresses and pants hanging out to dry on the other side of the yard. Work in the field is done with horse-drawn plows, and most families are relatively self-sufficient, with cows, pigs and chickens providing meat, milk and eggs.

The time machine feeling doesn’t just apply to the things you can see. The Amish people are known for a strong work ethic, as well as talented craftsmanship. Their beautiful quilts and sturdy, functional furniture have become well known for their artistic flair, but these products were born of necessity. For years, young men have worked as apprentices with experienced furniture and cabinet makers to learn the craft, to make products for their own communities but also to sell to help bring in income to the Amish community, to pay for the things they need that they can’t provide for themselves.

It is this dedication to hard work and creating superior products that appeals to us at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. We also appreciate hard work, and the beautiful craftsmanship that comes from items made with years of practice and knowledge of the trade. That’s why we’re proud to carry lines such as Daniel’s Amish and Palettes by Winesburg in our store. Both of these companies create furniture that fits well in the décor of almost any home, and the sturdy craftsmanship can hold up to any wear and tear your family might put on the furniture.

And of course, Daniel’s Amish and Palettes by Winesburg are proud to be American Made, making their furniture from wood harvested right here in America, and employing craftsmen who are honored to be passing on a tradition of furniture-making to the next generation.

Stop by Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see for yourself the high-quality of these Amish-made products. You might even find yourself imaging a hay field being plowed by a young man on a horse, wearing a black shirt and black hat. There’s just something peaceful and comforting about Amish Country.

Sleep Cool Through the Summer

Friday, June 19th, 2015

Tempur-Pedic-Breeze-Info-1024x875One of the great things about living in North Carolina is that we get to enjoy the beauty of four seasons. Bright-colored fall leaves, reasonably cold winters with a snowfall here and there, springtimes full of flowers blooming and hot summer made for spending time at the lake or camping in the mountains. But even with four seasons, sometimes it seems like the summer is the longest. Being in the South, we are in the area of the country that gets hot, humid days from June to August, and sometimes as early as May and as late as September. The heat and humidity doesn’t disappear when the sun goes down either. So how do you stay comfortable during the hot nights of summer when you’re trying hard to get a good night’s sleep?

Back in our grandparents’ days, people often slept on the porch. That’s where they might have better luck catching a few cool breezes during the night, and it got them out of the hot, stuffy house that had absorbed the heat of the day. Luckily today, most of our homes are air conditioned. But it can still get hot at night. Here are a few tips to help you sleep cooler, and get a better night’s sleep.

Let air circulate by using a ceiling fan

Sleep in the nude! It actually helps regulate your body temperature.

Avoid outdoor activities or active workouts just before bed.

Keep your room slightly cool. Research has found that 65 degrees is the optimal temperature for good sleep.

Use 100% cotton bedding. Natural fibers are best for regulating body temperature.

Get a mattress with cooling technology built in! That’s right, there are actually mattresses designed to help keep your body cool at night. Tempur-pedic has added its Tempur-Breeze cooling material to three of its popular mattress lines: Tempur-Rhapsody, Tempur-Cloud and Tempur-Cloud Supreme. The material is designed to keep heat away from the body, which makes the mattress feel cooler to the touch. In addition, the core of the mattress is designed to channel heat away from the body, getting the heat you produce even further away, to help you have a cool night’s sleep.

Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see for yourself the amazing new technology of Tempur-Breeze. After all, we are already enjoying those hot, muggy days of summer! Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

Celebrate Dad!

Thursday, June 4th, 2015

bowenFather’s Day is almost here, a time to give dad a little time and attention to let him know just how much we care about everything he does for his family. The special role fathers play in all our lives, whether they are our biological fathers or men who have made a difference in our lives, is important for support, confidence and building trust in others and healthy relationships. The least we can do in return is give dad a special gift!

This year, why not give dad a recliner, a chair of his own to relax in each day, and let the stress leave his body as relaxation sets in. Whether your dad is a sports fanatic, watching NASCAR, the NBA, college basketball and all sorts of football on TV, or whether he leans more towards adventure movies or HGTV, he’s sure to appreciate a great chair to watch his favorite shows in. And we have a great selection here at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. Come in today to try some out for yourself. Here are a few highlights of our featured brands:

Southern Motion: Whether you want to recline, swivel or rock, these chairs can do it all. The styles with electric motors for easy reclining are especially popular. After all, who doesn’t want a little excitement with their chair?

Hancock & Moore: Known for its high-quality leather on American-made products, any chair you find from this manufacturer is sure to bring elegance to your home.

Stressless by Ekornes: Don’t let the modern design of the Stressless recliners mislead you into thinking they’ve sacrificed comfort for looks. These recliners are designed with total relaxation in mind, perfectly supporting your head, neck, back and legs.

IMG: These recliners are also designed for maximum comfort. The ergonomic design has you recline at 135-degree angle, ideal for helping muscles in the back relax.

Once dad’s settled in his new chair, spend some time together watching one of your favorite movies with a big bag of popcorn! Here are a few of our picks for Father’s Day:

Father of the Bride: For dads of daughters especially, this movie is a sweet look at that daddy/daughter relationship, even once the daughter is practically grown up.

Taken: I don’t whether it’s the fact that Liam Neeson looks like an average guy more than your typical action hero, or the fact that he’s willing to risk everything to save his daughter from sex-trafficking kidnappers, but this movie is inspirational for dads in a very action movie sort of way.

National Lampoon’s Vacation: You’ve laughed at Chevy Chase’s adventures for years yourself, now share this one with your kids and watch the humor pass from one generation to the next. Anyone who has tried to give their family the best vacation possible will relate to Clark’s hijinks.

Parenthood: Father figures of all types abound in this classic film about families that inspired the popular TV show.

Mary Poppins: Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews might get most of the attention in this film, but there’s no denying the transformation seen in Mr. Banks’ character is one to make your heart melt. Follow it up with Saving Mr. Banks for another great look at a daughter’s unquestioning love for her father.
