Mother’s Day Gift Guide

mothers dayBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

With Mother’s Day less than two weeks away, it’s time to start planning your gift for Mom’s special day. We’ve curated a list of ideas that are sure to give mom the warm and fuzzies.

A. Frame up those happy memories with mom in decorative picture frames. It makes a simple gift feel special, and purposeful. We recommend the Zana, photo frames by Uttermost.

B. Express your love in whimsical form with the “Mother First” accent pillow by Manual Woodworkers and Weavers. Mom will be reminded just how much you love her all year long.

C. If flowers are your go to gift for mother’s day, step it up a notch this year with a decorative vase. The Thane vase from Uttermost is great for tall arrangements and would be beautiful on the mantle long after the flowers have wilted.

D. Make serving breakfast in bed a breeze with this Davaughn rolling cart with removable tray from Uttermost. It becomes part of mom’s gift, which she can use for mobile storage or an accent piece in any room.

E. The Burgess Brigadier settee by Fusion Furniture it the perfect spot for those heart to heart talks with mom. It’s cozy, inviting, and best of all, its budget friendly.

However you decide to treat Mom, take some time to fill her day with love and warmth. To find more things she would love, visit our Winston-Salem showroom.

Celebrating Earth Day with Green Furniture Solutions

Today is earth day, a day to remember that preserving this beautiful world around us is our responsibility; not only for ourselves, but for our future generations.  It starts with making environmentally conscious decisions, from the way we live, to the products we buy.  When it comes to furniture, you may not know what green options are available. So, we are highlighting just a few of our many furniture vendors that are making great strides towards preserving our earth through sustainable practices.

Vaughn Bassett Furniture

In 2007, the Galax, Virgina casegoods company began their “One for One” program that plants a tree for every tree used to produce their bedroom furniture.  Since the program began, over 1 Million trees have been planted. In addition to planting more trees, they also improved their rough end process to increase lumber yield, thus reducing the number of trees needed. They also made a commitment to sourcing their lumber locally, reducing transportation and their carbon footprint.

Ekornes

The Norwegian based company, best known for their Stressless chairs, is truly devoted to sustainable practices, making it part of their way of life. I experienced this personally when visiting their LEAD certified Morganton, NC plant last month. Recycling is top of mind on the plant floor, the office and the break room with stations set up throughout. They continue the recycling process by burning scrap wood used for their chair bases to heat their facilities.  This reduces energy use and scrap material sent to landfills. They also actively seek out green materials for use in their products like water based paints and lacquers.

Rowe Furniture

As a 70 year old upholstery company that prides itself of listening to its customers needs, Rowe is committed to being eco-friendly and adapting to those needs. They offer an eco-cushion that uses plant based materials from renewable resources.  They also incorporate a number of recycled materials in their products like recycled iron ore springs, down cushion fillers made from recycled plastic bottles and cotton made up of 97% recycled materials.

Visit our Winston Salem showroom to learn more about furniture vendors that are going Green.  Together we can preserve our natural resources.

Going Green = Buying Green.

5 Fun ways to spend your tax refund

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

The April 15th tax deadline is almost here, and if you are anticipating a refund, chances are you’re planning just how to spend it. Sure, you could be responsible and tuck it away in savings, but how fun is that?  We have a few ideas that are both fun and useful.

1. A Theater Room– Transform an under utilized guest room or bonus room into the perfect space to “Netflix and chill”. If a big screen is already on your refund list, add an entertainment console and a couple of theater chairs with lay-flat capabilities, power headrest and a USB charging station.

2. A GREAT night’s sleep – Or, 365 of them.  Nothing is worth the money more than a great mattress.  You just can’t put a price on quality sleep. With options like cooling technology, an adjustable base, memory foam, and hybrid combos you’ll feel like you are really pampering yourself. But let’s be honest, you deserve it. Looking to spend a little less? Start with a great pillow that also features cooling technology and memory foam.

3. An Outdoor Oasis – With Summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to splurge on new outdoor furniture and accessories. The world of outdoor living has truly expanded to include outdoor kitchens, living rooms, and even outdoor home theaters. Check out our recent post about outdoor accessories here.

4. The perfect comfy, cozy chair – Comfort is different for everyone, but one thing we all have in common is the need for our own spot to kick back and relax at the end of a long day.  May we suggest a swivel glider chair? There’s something about the smooth, relaxing motion that will help you unwind and make it your favorite chair.  If you’ve never tried one, you need to. While you’re at it get the ottoman too, so you can rest your tired feet.

5.  A Statement Piece – It could be a big piece of art, or an accent chest in turquoise blue; whatever speaks to you, expresses who you are and what you love.  Buy something that says “WOW”. Be bold and have fun!

No matter how you decide to treat yourself, we’ve got a great selection of products worth the splurge. Visit our Winston-Salem showroom today. We are located on 1910 Mooney Street, just behind the Carriage House restaurant.

Take the Stress out of furniture shopping

Friday, April 8th, 2016

sunbrella bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

What could be more stressful than making a big ticket purchase, like furniture, that you will have to live with for years? What if you make the wrong decision…it’s too big, too small, or won’t fit up the stairs. Then you are stuck with it. We at Bowen Town & Country Furniture want to make sure this does not happen to you. So, we are sharing our top tips for taking the stress out of furniture shopping.

1. Measure your space and create a layout. Take a few minutes to measure and sketch your room noting the placement of doors, windows, and other architectural features. These measurements are vital to determining what will fit best. Using our online room planner, you will be able to scale out your furniture selections to easily see if they are too big, or too small.  Don’t forget to measure any door  opening and stairwells leading to the room where your new furniture will go. Just because it will fit in the room, does not mean it will fit through the door.

2. Photograph existing items and bring samples.  If you are planning your color scheme around existing items, be sure to bring a photo or fabric sample with you to assist in the selection process.  It’s always a good idea to borrow fabric and finish samples to take home and view in your lighting. Lighting in your home can be completely different than in the storey, so that beautiful soft green fabric may look blue or gray in your lighting.

3. Do your research.  As we all know, the internet is a wealth of information, and research will educate you on the available options. Is eight way hand-tied important to you or will a sinuous, no-sag spring system do? Do you need a fabric that will withstand pets, kids and a possible hurricane? Would you prefer a product made in America?  These are all things that contribute to the quality and longevity of your furniture, and inevitably affect the price.  Once you are educated on quality ingredients, it will be easier to allocate a budget and determine what is non- negotiable for you.  You may pay more upfront, but the longevity of the product is well worth it.

4. Be true to your lifestyle.  You may fall in love with a gorgeous silk fabric, but you eat, drink, sleep and all out live on your sofa. Silk, although pretty to look at, is not the most durable fabric and it’s certainly not easy to clean.  Consider a more practical option like polyester, or a poly blend. For an even more life friendly fabric, consider Sunbrella or Crypton fabrics.  Even the cushion core matters.  A down wrapped cushion is curl-up kind of comfy, but it also requires fluffing, reshaping and adjusting.  If you prefer everything perfectly placed and crisp, then down is not for you.  Just be sure you are being honest with yourself about how you are going to live with your furniture, and make selections that fit your needs.

5. Purchase from a trustworthy source.  These days, it seems everyone has an online store. It can be really tempting to “add to cart” and avoid the trip to an actual brick and mortar store. But, do you really know what you are buying.  If you are planning on enjoying your furniture for years to come, it’s best to see, touch and feel it before you buy.  Not only will buying local ensure that you are not surprised at delivery, it will also allow you to build a relationship with a local sales associate who can guide you to the right decision.

At Bowen Town and Country, our sales staff have years of experience in the furniture industry, and we can help educate you on products, quality, warranties and more.  We have been a part of the Winston Salem community for 60 years  and we are here to make sure you don’t regret a major furniture purchase.
