What is Bohemian Style?

Wednesday, September 28th, 2016

bohemian styleIf you’re looking for a design aesthetic that is footloose and fancy free, then Bohemian style may be for you. Boho, as it is often called for short, is the free spirit of the design world, with fewer rules and more off beat, funkiness and fun. In fact, it’s non- conforming that there are many derivatives of the style, like boho chic, boho luxe, and rustic bohemian which combines elements from other design styles with bohemian style.

But, there are certain elements you can expect to see in every bohemian room; Texture, pattern, bold color and intriguing objects. Texture, piled in layers creates a cozy, inviting vibe. Throws and pashminas adorn lush upholstery, while embroidered and Mongolian fur pillows cover surfaces, including the floor, beckoning you to kick back and relax. Tassels are never out of place whether on curtains, bedding or even lamp shades. White is often used on walls as a subdued backdrop for the mix of bold colors and strong patterns that are anything but subtle. With Bohemian style, more color and pattern is better. Punches of reds, oranges and pinks are often used along with Suzani patterns and Soumak weave rugs. Accessories are unique and unusual, collected from travels and have a fascinating history or story. Pottery, tapestries, and other handmade items like macramé would all be used in the earthy inspired bohemian style. Furnishings are unpretentious with well used feel.

To get the look, start with furnishings that have a vintage appeal. A linen or velvet sofa with down cushions and a plethora of patterned pillows will fit the bill. Pair it with an unprotected leather chair, which will develop character marks over time, for that bomber jacket look. Add a saturated tone rug and poufs ottoman for relaxed seating. Accessorize the walls with a tapestry hanging or an interesting group of miss matched mirrors in a rich, metallic gold. Complete the look with collected trinkets from you explorations and glitzy lighting.
