As the year has come to an end, we are reviewing the best of 2016. Check out the furniture selections that were most popular with our customers this year.

#1 Hi-leg Recliner. The Woodbridge recliner from Hancock and Moore is a true traditional and our customers love the classic appeal. Most popular in leather, it’s extremely comfortable without being too bulky.

#1 Sofa. The Cindy Sofa by Robin Bruce earned the number one spot for comfort, because of the feather soft cushion that comes as a standard option. Simple rolled arms and turned legs means it will blend with most décor styles.

# 1 Sectional. Whether you prefer a traditional or more transitional style sectional, you can create it with the Custom Select series from Kincaid. The many style and size options make this sectional series a popular choice.

#1 Bedroom. The Reflections collection from Vaughn Bassett has been a favorite for some time, particularly in the medium cherry finish. This year, the dark cherry finish has grown in popularity. Offering simple lines and not overly adorned, it appeals to both young and old.

#1 Dining. When it comes to dining furniture, our customers love the quality story of Amish made. Top pick is the boat shape table paired with prestige chair from Palettes by Winesburg. The boat shape table is unique in shape and the prestige chair is surprisingly comfortable with its bent wood lumbar support.

After a great year, we are eager to see what 2017 holds for us at Bowen Town & Country. If new furniture is in your future for the upcoming year, we hope that you will find this list helpful, and we invite you to visit our showroom to see all we have to offer.

Furniture built like it used to be…

smith brothersBy: BreeAnn Cook

“They just don’t make furniture like they used to.” It’s a phrase we hear too often, and in some cases it’s true. In an effort to stay competitive with the ever changing marketplace, some upholstery manufacturers have opted to value engineer their products; meaning they have reduced the cost to produce my reducing the quality of materials used. In the small town of Berne, Indiana, a company called Smith Brothers Furniture has made it their mission to produce heirloom quality upholstery using only top grade materials.

There are three key quality features that make Smith Brothers product different. First, each frame is made of kiln dried, solid maple wood. The wood is kiln dried to remove moisture, making the wood more stable and less likely to split or crack over time. Then the frames are double doweled, corner blocked and screwed in the assembly process to strengthen the joint and ensure longevity. Secondly, they utilize a superior spring system. A machine tied coil spring system is affixed to the wooden frame with a helical suspension system, similar to those used in the automotive industry. The machine tied coil system is liken to eight way hand tied in that the coils are linked together to provide better support. The only difference is that instead of being tied by hand, which allows for human error, it is tied by machine. Each seat has its own coil unit, allowing for independent suspension and individual comfort. As a result, when sitting on the sofa, you will not fall into your neighbor. Thirdly, they use a better cushion core. Industry standard is 1.8 density foam, but Smith Brothers uses a 2.5 density foam because it offers better support, and breaks down less over time. To prove their dedication to quality and craftsmanship, they back all their products with a lifetime warranty on the frame, springs and cushions.

Beyond the framework of the sofa, Smith Brothers also flow matches all patterns, so that pattern motif will match from back, to seat, to the front of a piece and even across the arms. They even feature self decking, which has long been abandoned by other manufacturers to cut fabric cost. Remember your grandmother told you to lift the cushion to see if the fabric was the same underneath? “That’s how you can tell quality furniture” she said. Well, it’s definitely quality like your grandmother’s sofa, but with 1000 fabric choices, and 100 leather choices, it doesn’t have to look like hers.

What is Hollywood Glam Style?

Thursday, December 8th, 2016

hooker furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook

As the name indicates, this design style hales from the silver screen of Hollywood, and being true to its origin, is oh so theatrical and dramatic. It draws inspiration from Art Deco, Modern and Neo-classical styles, layering luxury and glitz with modestly scaled furnishings. The result is a show stopping aesthetic. Unlike Baroque, it’s not garish or overdone, but rather well edited. It is neither cluttered nor minimalistic. Finishes are often glossy or reflective such as lacquered or even mirrored. High contrast in black and white is a key component of the style, but color is also used in bold and purposeful ways to add drama. Prints utilized are geometrics, stripes or gilded Chinoiserie motifs. For fabrics, they must be lush and luxurious like velvet, silk or satin; maybe even a little fur. Lighting is used as an opportunity to make a statement, such as chandeliers dripping in crystals or a funky deco fixture.

Just as Hollywood Glam was influenced by other notable styles, it has made its own impression on popular design styles of today. One will often hear the term glam added to rustic, modern or bohemian style. It can also be used interchangeably with the term luxe.

Adding a little glam to your current style is simple. Switch out your existing toss pillows for something more luxurious. Dress your windows with velvet or silk drapes that break on the floor for drama. Create a stunning focal point with a symmetrical grouping of mirrors. Purchase a new lamp that really sparkles or add a mirrored accent piece. Make the most rudimentary room feel special with a glistening chandelier. However you decide to glamorize your space, we can help you set the stage. Visit BowenFurniture.com to see our selection of lamps, mirrors, and furnishing to help capture that Hollywood spirit.
