What to consider when buying a guest room mattress?

Let’s be honest…shopping for a mattress doesn’t rank highly on most people’s list of fun things to do. In fact, it is probably one of your the least favorite things. Considering that most of us are not planning to sleep on it, we probably do not put much time or effort into selecting a guest room mattress. However, if you’ve ever spent the night at a family member or friend’s house, and experienced a bad mattress, you may think twice before making that purchase. Here are a few things to consider when buying a mattress for a guest space.

1. Who will be using the mattress? If you host mostly couples, consider mattresses with encased coil technology. Encased coils reduce motion transfer, helping to eliminate partner interruption, which is one of the main causes of sleep loss. Memory foam mattresses also absorb motion transfer. Will you be hosting mostly younger guests, like grandchildren? Don’t assume that just because they are young the mattress isn’t important. Growing children require more sleep than adults, and a quality mattress will help them get a better night’s sleep.

2. How frequently will the mattress be used? If a guest room gets used once or twice a year, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest option possible. Unfortunately, this can be a bad move for both you and your occasional guests. What if your aging parent goes from a twice a year guest to a long-term guest, or you find yourself sleeping in the guest room while your spouse is sick? Suddenly, you regret buying that $299 mattress. Make sure to select a mattress that you would enjoy sleeping on for more than a night. That doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive, but it should offer adequate support and be comfortable.

3. Memory foam versus Innerspring? Sealy really explains it best when describing their new Response and Conform line. The Response line is an innerspring style mattress offering support that “holds” you, while the Conform line is a memory foam style mattress offering support that “hugs” you. If you can’t decide, go with a Hybrid model that offers the best of both worlds.

Whether it’s for a few nights or a few months, you want your guests to be comfortable. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, or a small fortunate to get a good quality mattress, but you do have to be willing to educate yourself on the options and try a few models. Visit our showroom today to try our Sealy lineup, and find a mattress that will make you and your guest happy.
