This is not your Grandfather’s office chair!

x chairBy: BreeAnn Cook

If you are among thousands of Americans who spend the majority of their day in an office chair, you know all too well the frustrations and pains that  can accompany it. Aching backs, stiff necks, toes going numb just to name a few. With nothing more than a simple height adjustment, most office  chairs fall short. They are one size fits all, leaving you uncomfortable and frustrated. The X-chair has a different approach, offering ten ergonomic  adjustments to make you comfortable. This is definitely not your Grandfather’s office chair. Here’s why…

The X-chair’s patented dynamic variable lumbar provides low back support that tilts to move as you move, offering continual support. Unlike most  office chairs, the X-chair has an adjustable back rest that moves up and down so you can get the lumbar perfectly positioned. The breathable Flex  mesh material gives all day support and is available in multiple colors, to suit your style. Leather is also available on certain models. The seat height  can be adjusted so your legs are at a ninety-degree angle, and seat depth can also be adjusted for ultimate fit and comfort. Which means you won’t feel like you’re leaning backward, due to a seat that is too deep. Ever noticed how most office chairs have arm rests that are static. They don’t move or adjust. X-chair’s arm rests are four dimensional. They can pivot in or out to achieve the perfect angle and have ten different height settings. The arm pads can slide from side to side and front to back. Unique to the X-chair is extensive variable recline feature that adjusts to your body by responding to your weight and height.

Finally, you can adjust the height and angle of the headrest to achieve ultimate neck comfort. No more straining your neck, just comfortable support. With so many features, Grandpa would love to have a chair like this and so will you. If you spend all day in a desk chair, you owe it to yourself to come try the X-chair. Experience it today at Bowen Town & Country Furniture.

The Rocking chair…a Southern staple with health benefits.

troutman chairsBy BreeAnn Cook

The front porch rocker is practically a Southern icon and is synonymous with a laid back lifestyle. From birth, we are familiarized with that soothing, rocking motion that seems to melt your cares away, but could there be more benefits than just relaxation? Various studies suggest that simply rocking in a rocking chair can have real health benefits. Late 90’s research at the University of Rochester showed that dementia and Alzheimer patients improved balance, strength and mood from rocking about 20 minutes three times a day. It resulted in happier patients with less anxiety. A teacher in Washington State discovered that his students with ADHD/ADD were able to stay more focused and on task when rocking in a chair, resulting in improved grades.

Rocking therapy has also increased recovery time and reduced the amount of pain medication needed for abdominal surgery patients and women who had C-sections. Of course, mothers instinctively rock their newborns as a means to calm them; therefore, rocking chairs have become common  fixtures in most maternity wards. Rocking not only soothes both mom and baby post birth, but can help relax the mother and reduce pain during labor. Rocking has been used to help with back pain for years, perhaps most notably by President John F. Kennedy. The gentle rocking motion relaxes and stretches the back muscles and it’s been reported that Kennedy had over a dozen rocking chairs, one everywhere he went, included his oval office and Air Force One. The “Carolina Rocker” then made by P& P Chairs became known as the “Kennedy Rocker” and can still be purchased today from Troutman Chair Co., who purchased P&P Chairs in 2008.

We are proud to carry Troutman Chair Co. rockers, made right here in North Carolina. Their superior comfort and construction earned them the title of “World’s Best Rocker”. They feature an arched back rail for shoulder comfort, and steam bent back slats for lumbar support. The seat is sloped in
two directions for extra comfort and the front of the seat is rounded down so as not to restrict circulation. They also use stair stepped side rungs to create just the right pitch for ease of rocking.

Answering your top design questions…

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

Working with clients both in their homes and in the store, I get quite a few design questions related to rugs, sofa cushion styles, and more. It seems that the same questions come up over and over, so let’s discuss your top concerns.

Q. Do I need to buy my rug before selecting my fabrics and furniture?

A. Designers tend to differ on this, but in my opinion, no. The idea of purchasing your rug first stems from high end oriental carpets, that are truly heirlooms, kept for many years before being passed down to a family member. Lifestyles dictate a more casual way of living and thus more casual rugs. Where oriental carpets tend to have strong patterns and many colors that determine the color palette, the more casual rugs have more open patterns, and often feature more geometric designs with only a couple of colors. Basically, styles have changed and the need to buy the rug first should change accordingly.

Q. What size rug do I need for my space?

A. It varies depending on the room size, but using a larger rug can make a room feel larger. A good rule of thumb, in a seating area, you want at least the front two feet of the furniture to be on the rug. For dining rooms, you need a rug large enough to accommodate all legs of the chairs when pulled out from the table. Keep in mind, that when using motion furniture like swivel chairs or reclining pieces, it is usually necessary to have a rug large enough to accommodate the entire base, so that the piece remains level.

Q. Which is better, a two cushion sofa or a three cushion sofa?

A. Two cushion sofas tend to be the same size as a three cushion sofas, but the cushions are larger. Larger cushions sit a bit softer and will need to be rotated more often for even wear. Two cushions sofas also feel more relaxed or casual, where three cushions feel more traditional. Ultimately, it comes down to personal style preference.

Q. Is it okay to put a bed in front of a window?

A. Absolutely. The bed is the focal point of the bedroom, and should be the first thing you notice. Sometimes, with a challenging floor plan, that requires placing the bed in front of windows. I recommend using an open headboard like a metal bed or a slatted bed, allowing light from the windows to filter through. Another option is to use a lower headboard that falls below the windows.

Need an answer to your design question? We would love to hear from you. Feel free to message us on Facebook or send us an email.

The Art of Upholstery…a labor of love.

Tuesday, March 28th, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

Recently, I had the opportunity to tour the C.R.Laine upholstery manufacturing plant in Hickory, North Carolina. I’ve sold furniture for years and I’m familiar with quality construction, but what I saw and learned during my visit had me asking “How can they sell it for so little?”

The entire experience was a complete delight. I joined a group of other designers and retailers from across the US to get an inside look at what makes C.R.Laine different. It is amazing the time and effort that goes into a single piece of furniture. The tour began in product development and planning, where conceptual drawings are created using a CAD program. The drawings are tweaked and optimized before being sent to pattern development, where patterns are created based on the drawings. The patterns are used to cut out the individual components of a piece of upholstery, such as an arm panel, a back panel or seat cushion. Each piece requires a pattern. Before cutting, the pattern must be laid out on the fabric to determine print placement. Once fabric layout is determined, it proceeds to cutting. During this time, the frame is also being prepared for upholstery. It starts with frame assembly, then moves on to finishing. After the frame is finished (stained or painted), the springs, webbing, and other support components are added. Back on the other side of the plant, the fabric cutting is complete, and the process has moved on to sewing. Each cushion and pillow casing is sewn, adding the welts, decorative trims and zippers. Now the fabric and frame come together in the upholstery department, where skilled artisans have spent years cultivating their craft. It was evident that this is not something one just picks up over night. It takes time to learn how to fold and tuck the fabric in such a way that it “flattering” to the piece. One must pay careful attention to make certain that the fabric is applied symmetrically, not pulled too tightly, so as to skew the pattern. Tufting is particularly challenging, and we learned that a single tufted ottoman can take two hours or more just to tuft properly. This doesn’t include the time spent in framing, sewing, finishing, etc… Once a piece is complete, it’s inspected for quality workmanship, and if approved, moves on steaming/pressing, then packing and shipping. The average piece of furniture leaving the C.R.Laine factory has been touched by at least seven, most likely more, individuals who take great pride in the products they produce. Every piece has a tag that reads “We are proud to put our signature on the work that we have crafted for you” and it is signed by each worker that helped create that piece of furniture along the way.

During the short two days spent with C.R.Laine team, I witnessed such passion. They were excited about their products, their leathers, their fabrics and their devotion to quality. They could make cheaper; they could use less foam, less springs and support, lower quality materials, and inferior construction methods, but they choose not to. That is what makes C.R.Laine different.

We are proud to carry their quality products, and we know that you will be proud to own it. Visit our showroom today to see it and try it for yourself. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.

Furniture built like it used to be…

smith brothersBy: BreeAnn Cook

“They just don’t make furniture like they used to.” It’s a phrase we hear too often, and in some cases it’s true. In an effort to stay competitive with the ever changing marketplace, some upholstery manufacturers have opted to value engineer their products; meaning they have reduced the cost to produce my reducing the quality of materials used. In the small town of Berne, Indiana, a company called Smith Brothers Furniture has made it their mission to produce heirloom quality upholstery using only top grade materials.

There are three key quality features that make Smith Brothers product different. First, each frame is made of kiln dried, solid maple wood. The wood is kiln dried to remove moisture, making the wood more stable and less likely to split or crack over time. Then the frames are double doweled, corner blocked and screwed in the assembly process to strengthen the joint and ensure longevity. Secondly, they utilize a superior spring system. A machine tied coil spring system is affixed to the wooden frame with a helical suspension system, similar to those used in the automotive industry. The machine tied coil system is liken to eight way hand tied in that the coils are linked together to provide better support. The only difference is that instead of being tied by hand, which allows for human error, it is tied by machine. Each seat has its own coil unit, allowing for independent suspension and individual comfort. As a result, when sitting on the sofa, you will not fall into your neighbor. Thirdly, they use a better cushion core. Industry standard is 1.8 density foam, but Smith Brothers uses a 2.5 density foam because it offers better support, and breaks down less over time. To prove their dedication to quality and craftsmanship, they back all their products with a lifetime warranty on the frame, springs and cushions.

Beyond the framework of the sofa, Smith Brothers also flow matches all patterns, so that pattern motif will match from back, to seat, to the front of a piece and even across the arms. They even feature self decking, which has long been abandoned by other manufacturers to cut fabric cost. Remember your grandmother told you to lift the cushion to see if the fabric was the same underneath? “That’s how you can tell quality furniture” she said. Well, it’s definitely quality like your grandmother’s sofa, but with 1000 fabric choices, and 100 leather choices, it doesn’t have to look like hers.

Did you know an adjustable base bed could improve your health?

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

tempur-flex_elite_ergoplus_room_horiz_nov14_5x7-jpg_11_23_2016_10_44_22_amBy: BreeAnn Cook

We all know the crucial role a quality mattress plays in a good night’s rest, but did you know that your sleep and your health could be improved with an adjustable base bed? An adjustable base, also known as a lifestyle base, is a foundation system that can raise and lower the head and foot of your mattress to achieve a more ergonomic position.

This ability to customize your sleeping position has a myriad of health benefits. For starters, it allows you to adjust to the natural curvature of your spine, which can relieve back and neck pain. It also reduces tension on the muscles and joints that is caused from laying flat. Think of your body as a rubber band. When you are laying completely flat, your body is stretched tight creating tension. Just elevating your legs slightly will begin to relieve tension on your lower back that you may not even realize is there. Elevating your feet can also reduce swelling in the legs and ankles.

Elevating your head improves your breathing, and reduces the strain on your heart by promoting better blood circulation. With better breathing, comes less snoring, which means both you and your partner will sleep better. Head elevation can also help those who suffer from acid reflux.

In addition to all of the health benefits of an adjustable base, there are a few lifestyle benefits as well. If you read, work or watch television in bed you can elevate yourself to a sitting position, instead of propping with pillows. And, if you are looking to pamper yourself, some models offer heat and massage functions.

Whether you want to reap the health benefits, sleep better, or have a better view of your favorite show in bed, you owe it to yourself to test drive a lifestyle adjustable base. Visit our showroom today to learn about the options available and try one today.

3 Things your guests will appreciate this Holiday Season

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

394100_openBy: BreeAnn Cook

1. Comfortable accommodations. Nothing makes you feel at home more than a great place to sleep. Instead of a worn out hand-me-down, treat your guests to the comfort of a memory foam mattress. Since memory foam adapts to weight and shape, it can be comfortable for a range of body types. Even if you don’t have a dedicated guest room, memory foam mattresses are often available on sleeper sofas. Top the bed with simple, yet soft linens. Trust me, your guests will appreciate good sheets over pretty toss pillows; use a minimum of 400 thread count, and limit accent pillows to one or two.

Shop sleeper sofas!

2. Storage. Guests appreciate a place to unpack their things, so they are not living out of a suitcase. A few empty drawers and a small amount of hanging space will do. Since guest rooms often mean limited space, opt for one storage piece that combines both. A narrow armoire or chest with hooks or pullout bar on the side will work nicely.

Shop bedroom chests!

3. A place to recharge. And, we’re not talking about sleep. Chances are your guests will arrive with multiple devices in tow, and they will need a place to recharge them when the battery life goes. Have a designated charging station available. Lots of furniture manufacturers are building them right into nightstands and end tables, making it super convenient. While you are at it, have a few extra charging cords on hand as well, in case guests forget theirs.

Shop nightstands!

These simple, but useful tips will go a long way in making your guests feel welcome this Holiday season. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.

Five Benefits Of A Standing Desk

Thursday, November 10th, 2016

desksBy: BreeAnn Cook

Long term sitting has been linked to a myriad of health issues, but what if you could reduce your risk just by changing your desk? Researchers like Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic have conducted multiple studies on the effects of long term sitting, and the simple changes that can help reduce your risk for major health issues. On average, Americans sit six to seven hours a day, add that to the average eight hours of sleep and it equates to a pretty sedentary lifestyle. Standing more during normal activities like day to day work can have great benefits. Here are five reasons to consider a standing desk:

1. Burn more calories. Standing burns 50 more calories per hour than sitting. Although this won’t replace your workout, it can really add up over a week’s time. Standing for just three hours a day for seven days equals over 1,000 additional calories burned.

2. Reduce Cancer Risk. Both colon cancer and breast cancer have been linked to prolonged sitting. Standing more can help reduce your risk.

3. Reduce Back and Neck Pain. Whether it’s a desk chair with improper back support, bad posture or slumping over your keyboard, those who sit for prolonged periods of time during work often complain of back and neck issues. Studies show that standing while working increases blood flow and improves posture. Study participants reported having less back and neck pain as a result.

4. Lower your risk for hear disease. Obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels are all contributors to heart disease. They have become known collectively as “sitting disease”, and all can be reduced by standing more.

5. Improve mood and energy levels. I think we can all admit that we get tired at work, be it staring at a screen or just concentrating too hard. Standing for periods of time throughout the day can not only break the monotony, but it can actual increase your energy through added blood flow, which can in turn boost your mood.

If all of these benefits have you ready to take a stand, but you’re concerned about the transition from sitting all day, Hooker furniture has offered an ingenious solution with their Curata sit/stand desk. It is a multi level desk that gives you the flexibility of sitting or standing with ample work space. Check this and other standing desk options out on our website HERE.
