Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

bowen furnitureWe see furniture day in and day out. We’ve seen styles come and go, and then come around again in a new way. With all that change, it can be challenging to pick a favorite, but we do tend to have pieces that we fancy more than others. We thought it would be fun to share each of our staff’s favorite picks and why.

Holly’s Employee pick…

If you’ve had the opportunity to meet our newest team member, Holly, then you know she has a vivacious personality. So, it comes as no surprise that her employee pick is a chair that truly allows her to express her individual taste. The Bradstreet chair by C.R.Laine has classic appeal, that can take on a bold twist when upholstered in one of the many fashion forward fabric options in the line.

Pair that with any custom matched Benjamin Moore paint color of your choice, and finish the look with custom trim options like nail-head, contrast fabric or decorative banding, for a look that is uniquely you. Not only does the Bradstreet chair make a killer style statement, it’s also incredibly comfortable. What’s not to love? Check it out HERE, or visit our showroom to see the fabric selections.

The Rocking chair…a Southern staple with health benefits.

Thursday, July 20th, 2017

troutman chairsBy BreeAnn Cook

The front porch rocker is practically a Southern icon and is synonymous with a laid back lifestyle. From birth, we are familiarized with that soothing, rocking motion that seems to melt your cares away, but could there be more benefits than just relaxation? Various studies suggest that simply rocking in a rocking chair can have real health benefits. Late 90’s research at the University of Rochester showed that dementia and Alzheimer patients improved balance, strength and mood from rocking about 20 minutes three times a day. It resulted in happier patients with less anxiety. A teacher in Washington State discovered that his students with ADHD/ADD were able to stay more focused and on task when rocking in a chair, resulting in improved grades.

Rocking therapy has also increased recovery time and reduced the amount of pain medication needed for abdominal surgery patients and women who had C-sections. Of course, mothers instinctively rock their newborns as a means to calm them; therefore, rocking chairs have become common  fixtures in most maternity wards. Rocking not only soothes both mom and baby post birth, but can help relax the mother and reduce pain during labor. Rocking has been used to help with back pain for years, perhaps most notably by President John F. Kennedy. The gentle rocking motion relaxes and stretches the back muscles and it’s been reported that Kennedy had over a dozen rocking chairs, one everywhere he went, included his oval office and Air Force One. The “Carolina Rocker” then made by P& P Chairs became known as the “Kennedy Rocker” and can still be purchased today from Troutman Chair Co., who purchased P&P Chairs in 2008.

We are proud to carry Troutman Chair Co. rockers, made right here in North Carolina. Their superior comfort and construction earned them the title of “World’s Best Rocker”. They feature an arched back rail for shoulder comfort, and steam bent back slats for lumbar support. The seat is sloped in
two directions for extra comfort and the front of the seat is rounded down so as not to restrict circulation. They also use stair stepped side rungs to create just the right pitch for ease of rocking.

Before you buy, consider this…

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

We’ve all bought something before that just didn’t turn out like we thought it would. You found the perfect fabric and the perfect chair, but when it arrived, it was NOT so perfect. Maybe the fabric didn’t pair up like you dreamed? It happens, so here are a few things to consider when selecting a fabric for your furniture.

First, consider scale. As a general rule, it’s best to use small scaled patterns on smaller pieces of furniture, and large scale on larger items. For example: a huge floral print looks fantastic when you can center the floral motif on the back of an ample lounge chair; however, that same big pattern will loose its impact on a small pull up chair. In the same token, a large pattern can be overwhelming on an entire sofa or sectional.

Next, consider shapes and contours. When you have a curvy or shaped piece, fabric application is very important. On a curved inside back, there will be wrinkles, because it is almost impossible to get the fabric smoothed on a curve. On solids it may not be a concern, but on patterns, these wrinkles can cause distorting. Same goes with tufting. Patterns can be greatly altered by tufting, which is why stripes and tufting do not mix well. Stripes and plaids do not work well on curved pieces either. Plaids in general are particularly tricky, because they have lines running in both directions, making them extra challenging to line up and match. Save stripes and plaids for frames that are simple and clean lined.

Lastly, consider the fabric content for the application. Linens are light and luxurious, but are prone to wrinkling. Cottons can wrinkle and crease too. If this bothers you, then use them sparingly and wisely. They are great on pillows, items with tight backs and seats, and smaller cushions. Wrinkles will be more prominent on larger or longer cushions, often referred to as comfort wrinkles. This is also true on down cushions, which also have those cozy comfort wrinkles.

Don’t be afraid to have fun with fabric. If you love it, embrace it. Just give the application some serious thought first. When in doubt, try our online draping tool for Kincaid, Rowe, and Robin Bruce. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

Find your cushion comfort

Tuesday, January 10th, 2017

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook

As consumers, comfort is typically our top priority when it comes to purchasing upholstered furniture. If we sit on a sofa or chair that isn’t comfortable, we move on to the next one, not realizing that we might have other options. Most upholstery manufacturers offer three or more cushion options allowing you to customize your comfort level. Although each manufacturer will have different capabilities, we are going to explain the most common types.

The standard option usually consists of a 1.8 density foam core wrapped in Dacron batting. 1.8 density foam has long been the industry standard but we are starting to see a shift to 2.0 density foam. Higher end companies will often use 2.5 density foam called Qualux, which lasts longer over time. Be sure to ask what the standard cushion option is, as it can vary from vendor to vendor.

Firm or extra firm cushions consist of the same ingredients as a standard cushion, except the cushion core is made of a firmer, denser foam. This is a good option if you do not like that “sink into” feeling. It’s also a great option for elderly who find it difficult to get up from a standard cushion. Some vendors will offer a spring down cushion as an upgraded option, which actually has springs built into the cushion itself. Pocketed coils are encompassed within the foam core to provide extra support. This is a good option for those who like a medium firmness.

If you prefer a softer one, then consider a down blend cushion option. It has a foam core, wrapped in Dacron, and an additional layer of down and feather blend on top. This down blend layer is wrapped in a down proof ticking to resist the feathers coming through the fabric cover. Down blend cushions are a softer, sink into type cushion, and will have a more casual look, often referred to a comfort wrinkles. They require more fluffing than standard cushions.

Lastly, some higher end companies will offer an all down option which is ultra soft and luxurious. All down will compact as you sit in it, and will require constant fluffing. This is the best option for those who want to curl up and sink into their sofa, and who don’t mind a messy, casual look.

Every manufacturer has different options, so be sure to ask your salesperson about the options available on your favorite product. We invite you to visit our showroom and test drive the various cushion options and find your cushion comfort.

5 Fun ways to spend your tax refund

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

The April 15th tax deadline is almost here, and if you are anticipating a refund, chances are you’re planning just how to spend it. Sure, you could be responsible and tuck it away in savings, but how fun is that?  We have a few ideas that are both fun and useful.

1. A Theater Room– Transform an under utilized guest room or bonus room into the perfect space to “Netflix and chill”. If a big screen is already on your refund list, add an entertainment console and a couple of theater chairs with lay-flat capabilities, power headrest and a USB charging station.

2. A GREAT night’s sleep – Or, 365 of them.  Nothing is worth the money more than a great mattress.  You just can’t put a price on quality sleep. With options like cooling technology, an adjustable base, memory foam, and hybrid combos you’ll feel like you are really pampering yourself. But let’s be honest, you deserve it. Looking to spend a little less? Start with a great pillow that also features cooling technology and memory foam.

3. An Outdoor Oasis – With Summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to splurge on new outdoor furniture and accessories. The world of outdoor living has truly expanded to include outdoor kitchens, living rooms, and even outdoor home theaters. Check out our recent post about outdoor accessories here.

4. The perfect comfy, cozy chair – Comfort is different for everyone, but one thing we all have in common is the need for our own spot to kick back and relax at the end of a long day.  May we suggest a swivel glider chair? There’s something about the smooth, relaxing motion that will help you unwind and make it your favorite chair.  If you’ve never tried one, you need to. While you’re at it get the ottoman too, so you can rest your tired feet.

5.  A Statement Piece – It could be a big piece of art, or an accent chest in turquoise blue; whatever speaks to you, expresses who you are and what you love.  Buy something that says “WOW”. Be bold and have fun!

No matter how you decide to treat yourself, we’ve got a great selection of products worth the splurge. Visit our Winston-Salem showroom today. We are located on 1910 Mooney Street, just behind the Carriage House restaurant.

Downsizing Your Decorating

Thursday, October 8th, 2015

bowenRetiring is great for a lot of reasons. You finally have control of your own schedule, which means you have more time for traveling, spending time with the grandkids and doing all the activities you enjoy, whether it’s golf, bridge, shopping or whatever strikes your fancy. But one thing you don’t want to do is spend all of your time in retirement taking care of a big yard and cleaning a big house. That’s just one reason why many people look at downsizing in retirement. Having less upkeep means more time on your hands for fun!

The important thing to remember is just because you’re moving into a smaller home doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style and comfort. If you’re worried about how you’ll make the furniture in your current home fit into a smaller place, maybe the answer is to ditch that old furniture and find something new! Your kids probably need a little help filling up their own homes anyway, so they’ll gladly take that large dining room table and big, king-size bed off your hands.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when decorating and shopping for furniture for a new, smaller home, or maybe for that first-time apartment:

  • Go for quality over quantity. This is the time to invest in good-quality furniture, or something that really makes a statement. You won’t have room for a lot of chairs, or even a big sofa, so look for a loveseat-sized sofa and a chair that you really love.
  • Choose multi-purpose furniture. Ottomans that open up into storage for blankets or extra pillows and beds with built-in drawers in place of a trundle bed are great for storage-deprived small homes.
  • Look for durable fabric. When you have fewer places to sit, the furniture that you do sit on will get more wear and tear. There are plenty of great options in durable fabrics such as Krypton and Sunbrella, to help ensure your furniture investments look fresh and clean for years to come.

If you’re thinking about downsizing, or getting ready to help your kids move out on their own to a new apartment, come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture to see first-hand some of the great options available. From versatile pieces in Universal’s smartstuff collection to great chairs that will provide comfort without clutter in the Stressless  and IMG lines, we have a lot to offer.

6 Stress-Relief Tips for Tax Time

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

IMG reclinersLet’s face it. Just looking at the calendar in April can cause our stress levels to rise. That April 15 date is looming, when we all have to account to Uncle Sam and for many of us, pay up a little more. Even if you’re one of the lucky ones getting a refund, finding all the documentation and filling out the forms is stressful.

We’ve compiled a list of some great ways to relieve stress, to help you out now during tax season and other times during the year. They’re all easy to do and have you feeling relaxed in no time!

  1. Just Breathe. It might seem simple, but taking a few minutes to do a deep-breathing exercise has been shown to slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure. Close your eyes, sit up straight, and slowly inhale, taking air in all the way down to your abdomen. Then exhale just as slowly, letting all that stress escape with your breath through your mouth.
  2. Practice Progressive Relaxation. This one takes the breathing a step further to concentrate on relaxing your muscles. Lay down flat and make sure your clothing is comfortable. Contract the muscles in your left foot, count to ten, then release. Do the same for your right foot, and progressively move up your body, one muscle group at a time, legs, hands, and arms. When you’re finished, you’ll feel as light as air.
  3. Chew Gum. Right up there with breathing, this is pretty easy. Studies have shown that chewing gum reduces cortisol levels, the chemical that causes us to feel stressed.
  4. Talk to Someone. Pick up the phone and call a friend or relative, or meet up with a friend or your spouse for lunch. Sharing what’s going on in your day is a great way to get things off your shoulders, and maybe even get some valuable feedback.
  5. Get some Exercise. Whether it’s a walk with the dog, throwing Frisbee with your kids or just taking a break from your office chair to walk up and down some steps, getting moving is a great way to relieve stress.
  6. Sit in a Recliner! Yes, leave it to a furniture store to include a chair as a stress relief. But when it comes to the chairs from IMG or Ekornes, we know first-hand that just the act of sitting down can relieve stress. These collections are designed to fit the human body, with neck and lumbar support that helps you relax from the moment you sit in the chair. Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to give it a try. Once you sit in one, you’ll never want another chair.

IMG Relaxer Recliners That Help Your Back

Thursday, February 5th, 2015

101_b1c86b1a53f7efa1How many times were you told by your mother to sit up straight? It looks nice to be sitting at attention with your back at a 90 degree angle to your lower body, but it turns out that advice our mothers gave us might just be hurting us! Just sitting in a chair puts more weight on the discs at the base of your spine than they support while standing. And with a little bad posture, it puts even more strain on your lower back. (So in this case your mom was right, sitting up straight is better than slouching!) As little as a 20-degree angle off normal position can increase the pressure on your lower lumbar discs to more than 2.7 times your total body weight.

So how can you relax if just sitting is potentially bad for you? The designers at IMG have come up with a solution. They found that sitting at a 135 degree angle provides the least strain on your back, allowing your muscles to fully relax.

With that in mind they have created a line of sofas and chairs that are not only comfortable to sit in, but allow you to relax in a position as ergonomically correct as possible. Their chairs are designed to provide support to the knees, back, neck and head, with special attention to the lumbar region. It is important to choose the correct size chair for your body, paying attention to seat height and depth and back height. They also pay attention to the placement of the armrests, as it is important to be able to place your arms down without slouching your shoulders, and putting more strain on your back.sitting

While ergonomics is a priority for IMG, you won’t have to sacrifice style for function. Quality leather in a variety of colors and a wide range of fabrics are available to choose from, allowing you to customize your new chair to fit your personal style.

Come in to Bowen Town and Country Furniture today to check out some of the latest offerings from this wonderful furniture manufacturer. Our expert staff can assist you in finding the chair that fits your body, and before you know it, you will be at home relaxing and feeling better than you ever have.
