bowen furnitureStaff Pick Series…

We see furniture day in and day out. We’ve seen styles come and go, and then come around again in a new way. With all that change, it can be challenging to pick a favorite, but we do tend to have pieces that we fancy more than others. We thought it would be fun to share each of our staff’s favorite picks and why.

David Paff’s employee pick…

David appreciates the quality story of solid wood furniture, but he also likes a break from the traditional style that tends to accompany it. That’s why he chose the new Plank Road dining collection from Kincaid as his employee pick. Plank Road offers solid wood construction, with a reclaimed barn wood feel, making it an excellent choice for active families. Available in two finish options, Charcoal and Stone, it has clean lines with simple metal details that seamlessly blends modern and vintage styling. Also, the collection offers a variety of seating and storage options, allowing you to mix and match for your lifestyle. A pair of Oakley upholstered hostess chairs, mixed with ladderback side chairs, and even an upholstered bench gives flexible seating options, and creates an eclectic blend that’s unique and different, not so cookie cutter. Visit our showroom to see Plank Road dining or shop the collection HERE.

We see furniture day in and day out. We’ve seen styles come and go, and then come around again in a new way. With all that change, it can be challenging to pick a favorite, but we do tend to have pieces that we fancy more than others. We thought it would be fun to share each of our staff’s favorite picks and why.

Garry Crist’s employee pick

Comfort and value are two things that rank highly on Garry’s list. That why his employee pick is the Dalton Sofa with chaise from Rowe furniture. This particular sofa chaise combo offers the functionality of a small sectional with the flexibility of a standard sofa.

Unlike most sectionals, it features an independent storage ottoman, and a separate chaise cushion, so the chaise portion can be flipped from the right hand of the sofa to the left. It also comes with an extra seat cushion allowing it to be used as just a sofa. What this means for you is no fear of commitment that comes with a typical sectional, where you are forced to choose between a left or right-hand chaise, limiting your furniture layout possibilities.

With hundreds of fabric options, and pricing starting at just $1500, this sofa chaise combo is an incredible value. And Garry knows first hand how comfortable it is to stretch out on, since both of his children own one. You really can’t get a better testimonial than that!

What to consider when buying a guest room mattress?

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

bowen furniture

By: BreeAnn Cook

Let’s be honest…shopping for a mattress doesn’t rank highly on most people’s list of fun things to do. In fact, it is probably one of your the least favorite things. Considering that most of us are not planning to sleep on it, we probably do not put much time or effort into selecting a guest room mattress. However, if you’ve ever spent the night at a family member or friend’s house, and experienced a bad mattress, you may think twice before making that purchase. Here are a few things to consider when buying a mattress for a guest space.

1. Who will be using the mattress? If you host mostly couples, consider mattresses with encased coil technology. Encased coils reduce motion transfer, helping to eliminate partner interruption, which is one of the main causes of sleep loss. Memory foam mattresses also absorb motion transfer. Will you be hosting mostly younger guests, like grandchildren? Don’t assume that just because they are young the mattress isn’t important. Growing children require more sleep than adults, and a quality mattress will help them get a better night’s sleep.

2. How frequently will the mattress be used? If a guest room gets used once or twice a year, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest option possible. Unfortunately, this can be a bad move for both you and your occasional guests. What if your aging parent goes from a twice a year guest to a long-term guest, or you find yourself sleeping in the guest room while your spouse is sick? Suddenly, you regret buying that $299 mattress. Make sure to select a mattress that you would enjoy sleeping on for more than a night. That doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive, but it should offer adequate support and be comfortable.

3. Memory foam versus Innerspring? Sealy really explains it best when describing their new Response and Conform line. The Response line is an innerspring style mattress offering support that “holds” you, while the Conform line is a memory foam style mattress offering support that “hugs” you. If you can’t decide, go with a Hybrid model that offers the best of both worlds.

Whether it’s for a few nights or a few months, you want your guests to be comfortable. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, or a small fortunate to get a good quality mattress, but you do have to be willing to educate yourself on the options and try a few models. Visit our showroom today to try our Sealy lineup, and find a mattress that will make you and your guest happy.

Leather

Monday, September 11th, 2017

By: BreeAnn Cook

Leather can be a beautiful and durable option for your home, but it’s important to know which the best choice for your lifestyle is. Here are few leather definitions that will help you make the right selection:

Aniline refers to leather that has been dyed all the way through with a transparent dye. Only the highest quality leathers are used for this process
because natural markings will show through the transparent dye. The natural softness of the leather is preserved but it is more susceptible to staining or soiling, so it is a good choice for furniture that will have light to moderate use.

Semi Aniline is an aniline dyed leather that has an added top coat of pigment creating more uniform color and protection . This type of leather is a good option for upholstery that will be used regularly.

Pigmented (protected) leather is first buffed to a uniform surface and then coated with pigment to create uniform color. This provides durability and
hides natural blemishes, making it more resistant to staining and fading, and thus lower maintenance. Consider protected leather for heavily used
upholstery.

Grain is a term used to describe the wrinkles, markings, texture, and other natural characteristics of a hide.

Top Grain is the outermost layer of a hide and is the most durable.

Full Grain is that leather that has not been altered other than the removal of hair. It is the most genuine type of leather, and retains its original texture
and markings.

Corrected Grain leather has been buffed to remove blemishes then covered with a new, artificial grain created using pigments and other finishes.

Split leather is made of the lower layer of hide that has been “split” away from the upper grain. It is more fragile than full grain leather and is often
used for suede.

Suede is split leather that has been buffed and brushed to create a fuzzy surface feel.

Nubuck is leather that has been buffed and brushed to create a soft, velvety effect. It is created from the out grain of the hide, unlike suede which is
created from the inner side of the hide, making it stronger and more durable.

The most important factor when shopping for leather furniture is the intended use. Be sure to consider how you will live in the furniture, and
select a leather type appropriate to that use. Unprotected leather can feel luxurious and exude natural beauty, but its not the best choice for an active
family or pets. To learn more about leather options or to see our selection, visit our showroom today.

Cool new finds from the High Point Furniture Market

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

The High Point Furniture Market is the showplace for manufacturers to debut their latest and greatest in new products. Since technology has become an integral part of our lives, manufacturers seek new ways to impress us with their tech tools. Let’s talk about some of the hot new features.

Southern Motion introduced us to the articulating headrest that provides perfect neck support while optimizing the television viewing angle. They also gave us full power recliners and a built in USB port for charging our devices while we relax. Now, they are offering an app that controls your recliner. What???? Well since you already have your cell phone handy, why not use it to recline your chair. The app also allows you to set your favorite chair position with memory settings.

If you own an IMG Comfort Relaxer, you already know that they are extremely comfortable. They swivel, glide, recline and have an adjustable headrest, all without taking up much space. They are also available in both power and manual models. Now, IMG has added a power headrest and power lumbar support option. So, instead of a single motor to recline the relaxer, there are now three motors, one for each function. This option is currently available on the Chelsea model only, but should be available on more models soon.

You may remember our blog post a few months ago on the health benefits of a standing desk. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Now, you can have a desk that adjusts to your desired height at the touch of a button. Gat Creek introduced the Sullivan lift desk that transitions from a seated height to standing height with ease. It can move from a minimum 28” height to a maximum 47” height, and can carry up to 165 pounds of office equipment. It also features programmable memory buttons allowing you to adjust to four different height preferences. It comes in two lengths, 48” and 60”, and is available in a variety of finishes on Ash, Cherry or Maple. Watch their video here.

These are just a few on the new introductions that you can expect to see on our showroom floor in a few months. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, so you can be one of the first to know when the new products arrive! Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.

Before you buy, consider this…

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

We’ve all bought something before that just didn’t turn out like we thought it would. You found the perfect fabric and the perfect chair, but when it arrived, it was NOT so perfect. Maybe the fabric didn’t pair up like you dreamed? It happens, so here are a few things to consider when selecting a fabric for your furniture.

First, consider scale. As a general rule, it’s best to use small scaled patterns on smaller pieces of furniture, and large scale on larger items. For example: a huge floral print looks fantastic when you can center the floral motif on the back of an ample lounge chair; however, that same big pattern will loose its impact on a small pull up chair. In the same token, a large pattern can be overwhelming on an entire sofa or sectional.

Next, consider shapes and contours. When you have a curvy or shaped piece, fabric application is very important. On a curved inside back, there will be wrinkles, because it is almost impossible to get the fabric smoothed on a curve. On solids it may not be a concern, but on patterns, these wrinkles can cause distorting. Same goes with tufting. Patterns can be greatly altered by tufting, which is why stripes and tufting do not mix well. Stripes and plaids do not work well on curved pieces either. Plaids in general are particularly tricky, because they have lines running in both directions, making them extra challenging to line up and match. Save stripes and plaids for frames that are simple and clean lined.

Lastly, consider the fabric content for the application. Linens are light and luxurious, but are prone to wrinkling. Cottons can wrinkle and crease too. If this bothers you, then use them sparingly and wisely. They are great on pillows, items with tight backs and seats, and smaller cushions. Wrinkles will be more prominent on larger or longer cushions, often referred to as comfort wrinkles. This is also true on down cushions, which also have those cozy comfort wrinkles.

Don’t be afraid to have fun with fabric. If you love it, embrace it. Just give the application some serious thought first. When in doubt, try our online draping tool for Kincaid, Rowe, and Robin Bruce. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.

What you need to know before buying a sectional

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017

sofasBy: BreeAnn Cook

Most homes today embrace the open concept floor plan, with fewer walls and larger, more spacious living areas. Unfortunately, with so much openness, it can be challenging to arrange furniture. Sectionals are a popular choice for defining the living room, but they can be tricky to order. Here are few things you need to know about ordering a sectional.

1. They are left and right hand pieces, labeled LAF or RAF, meaning left hand facing or right hand facing. When you are facing the piece of furniture, the arm will be either on the left or the right respectively. Some manufacturers will label them LSE or RSE, which means left seated end or right seated end. When you are seated in the piece, the arm will be on your left or right. Make sure you pay attention to these labels and arm placement, to confirm that you purchasing the correct configuration.

2. Most manufacturers offer a sofa with a built in corner. Corner pieces are required when creating an “L” shape, but a built in corner unit often saves money as it reduces the number pieces required. When looking at the component options, be sure to look for the word “corner” when selecting sofa pieces. These can often be mistaken for a left or right sofa piece, especially when looking at line drawings only.

3. Wedge pieces tend to be large and take up more space. If you are trying to conserve space, opt for a corner unit instead of the wedge.

4. Consider seam placement. Since a sectional consists of multiple pieces connected together, there will be seams where each connects. Careful planning will help you conceal these seams. This is another example where using a sofa with built in corner is a good idea, as it eliminates a seam, at least on one side of the sectional. If one portion of the sectional will back up against a wall, plan to have the seam against the wall, not on the floating portion of the sectional. Sometimes, seams cannot be avoided, and in those cases, adding a console table behind the sectional will hide unsightly junctions.

5. Speaking of connections… be sure to ask about how the sectional clips together. You want to make certain that the manufacturer offers some sort of clip system, so that your pieces will stay connected and not move. There are different types of clips and some are easier to reconnect than others. Don’t be afraid to ask your sales person for a demonstration, so that you will know how to fix the issue if your sectional becomes unclipped.

Take your time, draw a sketch if needed, and double check item descriptions before placing your order. Start shopping our sectional selection today. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.
