Leather can be a beautiful and durable option for your home, but it’s important to know which the best choice for your lifestyle is. Here are few leather definitions that will help you make the right selection:

Aniline refers to leather that has been dyed all the way through with a transparent dye. Only the highest quality leathers are used for this process
because natural markings will show through the transparent dye. The natural softness of the leather is preserved but it is more susceptible to staining or soiling, so it is a good choice for furniture that will have light to moderate use.

Semi Aniline is an aniline dyed leather that has an added top coat of pigment creating more uniform color and protection . This type of leather is a good option for upholstery that will be used regularly.

Pigmented (protected) leather is first buffed to a uniform surface and then coated with pigment to create uniform color. This provides durability and
hides natural blemishes, making it more resistant to staining and fading, and thus lower maintenance. Consider protected leather for heavily used

Grain is a term used to describe the wrinkles, markings, texture, and other natural characteristics of a hide.

Top Grain is the outermost layer of a hide and is the most durable.

Full Grain is that leather that has not been altered other than the removal of hair. It is the most genuine type of leather, and retains its original texture
and markings.

Corrected Grain leather has been buffed to remove blemishes then covered with a new, artificial grain created using pigments and other finishes.

Split leather is made of the lower layer of hide that has been “split” away from the upper grain. It is more fragile than full grain leather and is often
used for suede.

Suede is split leather that has been buffed and brushed to create a fuzzy surface feel.

Nubuck is leather that has been buffed and brushed to create a soft, velvety effect. It is created from the out grain of the hide, unlike suede which is
created from the inner side of the hide, making it stronger and more durable.

The most important factor when shopping for leather furniture is the intended use. Be sure to consider how you will live in the furniture, and
select a leather type appropriate to that use. Unprotected leather can feel luxurious and exude natural beauty, but its not the best choice for an active
family or pets. To learn more about leather options or to see our selection, visit our showroom today.

Trends for 2015

Thursday, February 26th, 2015

bowen123Just like trends in the fashion world, things come in and out of style in the furniture and home décor world. Luckily, rather than becoming outdated, some things just turn into antiques! But that doesn’t mean you don’t want your home to look up to date and stylish. Here at Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we aren’t necessarily fortune tellers, but from looking through our manufacturers new collections, visiting the furniture market and talking with customers, we’ve seen a few trends that are becoming pretty popular for 2015.

  • Pantone’s color of the year: Marsala. The popularity of wine must have finally reached beyond the food world. Pantone’s group of color experts have dubbed marsala as this year’s top color, and its rich, earthy tones are sure to be a crowd pleaser. Not quite as dark as burgundy but with more pop than the neutral grays and tans, marsala will be a great color for an accent chair, pillows, draperies or walls.
  • Not to be outdone by marsala, the color blue is another very popular color for 2015. Depending on the type of fabric, it can look elegant or casual, and the versatile color has a calming effect. So add some blue to your home, and you’ll help create a more peaceful environment.
  • Native influences. Whether it’s Native Americans or Eskimos, the patterns and art of these cultures is finding its way on pillows, blankets and artwork. They look great up against a neutral couch or wall.
  • Large print and florals. This trend is big in the fashion world as well as in furniture right now. Flower power is back, with a vengeance! Using these types of patterns is a great way to make a statement with your furniture choices and brighten up a room.

These new trends are all great inspiration for doing some redecorating. Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture to see how they look in person, and choose a few pieces of furniture covered in marsala, blue or floral prints to update your own home’s look.

Hancock & Moore Leather

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

LeatherSamplesThis truly unique upholstery material is a hallmark of Hancock & Moore seating. We devote many hours hand selecting the finest leathers being produced today. We look for grain consistency, which means the leather will absorb color uniformly when dyed. Our leathers are selected for a natural appearance, with distinctive markings that impart unique character. The natural surface of leather is like a landscape, with varying textures and shadowy furrows. These distinctive features are unique to genuine leather, a product which has been raised rather than engineered. As with all things in nature, no two hides will be exactly alike. A. Cattle ranchers use distinctive brands to identify their steers, these brands are rarely seen on furniture.
B. Healed scratches from barbed wire nicks are common markings on an unaltered hide.
C. Pore patterns (the hide’s grain) distinguish the surface of the unaltered hide.
D. Neck and shoulder wrinkles look like furrows.

Tips to Keep Your Leather Looking Great

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

Handcrafted Furniture by Hancock and MooreThere’s no question that a nice piece of leather furniture can instantly add class to your décor. The elegance and comfort of leather can’t be beat. But many people shy away from it either because they feel it is too expensive, or not durable enough for everyday use. Both of these myths can be proved wrong. Leather furniture, especially good quality furniture such as that made by Hancock and Moore, might have a higher price point than comparable upholstery furniture. But unlike cloth, leather can last a lifetime. It even looks better as it ages, as the wear and use brings out its natural patina. So in the long run you are getting your money’s worth.

Leather is also very durable, after all, its original use was to protect an animal from the elements. Kids and dogs are no more of a worry around leather furniture than they are any other piece of furniture in your house.

And finally, leather furniture is relatively easy to take care of. Follow these simple steps, and your leather will look as good as the day you bought it, if not better, for years to come.

* Wipe your furniture with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust, and use a vacuum for the crevices.

* Once every 6 to 12 months, use a leather conditioner to help protect the furniture and keep it clean. We recommend Guardsmen Leather Conditioner at Bowen Town & Country Furniture.

* For the inevitable spill, just grab an absorbent, dry cloth to wipe up the mess. If you need to use something moist, make sure to use as little moisture as possible. And never use regular household cleaners on leather. They could cause more damage than the spill.

* As leather ages, you might begin to see small cracks. Just use a microfiber cloth to buff them out.

* Placement of your furniture is just as important as regular maintenance. Keep leather out of direct sunlight to keep it looking nice for longer.

No matter what you’re looking for, whether it’s a modern-style leather recliner from our Stressless line or a more traditional sofa from Hancock and Moore, we have the furniture to fit your style at Bowen Town and Country. And by following the tips above, you will protect your investment and enjoy your new leather furniture for years to come.

Hancock and Moore – A Passion For Craftsmanship

Saturday, December 7th, 2013

Deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Hancock & Moore started with a vision to manufacture the finest quality furniture that would remain beautiful for generations. This became reality in 1981, when Hancock & Moore was founded. That vision is displayed in each piece of Hancock and Moore furniture through the skillful touch of master craftsmen like Jimmy Moore.

He grew up learning the skills of a carpenter, turning wood into artful creations. The desire to make distinctive furniture was an instilled value and the skill to make it was a gift. He spent hours carving, hand-sanding, sewing and upholstering handcrafted pieces. This, he decided, was the “ideal” way to build a unique brand of furniture. With the help of his fellow craftsmen, he transforms solid woods, soft leathers and fine fabrics into handcrafted furnishings no machine could ever match. Each piece of Hancock & Moore furniture bears the signatures of these artisans that created it. Whether it is crafting custom orders or surveying production, his skilled vision for perfection remains.

Jimmy Moore is one of the last to leave at the end of each work day, assuring that your handcrafted Hancock & Moore piece will result in furniture that you will enjoy and can be proud of for years to come. Tools_2
