What to consider when buying a guest room mattress?

bowen furniture

By: BreeAnn Cook

Let’s be honest…shopping for a mattress doesn’t rank highly on most people’s list of fun things to do. In fact, it is probably one of your the least favorite things. Considering that most of us are not planning to sleep on it, we probably do not put much time or effort into selecting a guest room mattress. However, if you’ve ever spent the night at a family member or friend’s house, and experienced a bad mattress, you may think twice before making that purchase. Here are a few things to consider when buying a mattress for a guest space.

1. Who will be using the mattress? If you host mostly couples, consider mattresses with encased coil technology. Encased coils reduce motion transfer, helping to eliminate partner interruption, which is one of the main causes of sleep loss. Memory foam mattresses also absorb motion transfer. Will you be hosting mostly younger guests, like grandchildren? Don’t assume that just because they are young the mattress isn’t important. Growing children require more sleep than adults, and a quality mattress will help them get a better night’s sleep.

2. How frequently will the mattress be used? If a guest room gets used once or twice a year, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest option possible. Unfortunately, this can be a bad move for both you and your occasional guests. What if your aging parent goes from a twice a year guest to a long-term guest, or you find yourself sleeping in the guest room while your spouse is sick? Suddenly, you regret buying that $299 mattress. Make sure to select a mattress that you would enjoy sleeping on for more than a night. That doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive, but it should offer adequate support and be comfortable.

3. Memory foam versus Innerspring? Sealy really explains it best when describing their new Response and Conform line. The Response line is an innerspring style mattress offering support that “holds” you, while the Conform line is a memory foam style mattress offering support that “hugs” you. If you can’t decide, go with a Hybrid model that offers the best of both worlds.

Whether it’s for a few nights or a few months, you want your guests to be comfortable. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, or a small fortunate to get a good quality mattress, but you do have to be willing to educate yourself on the options and try a few models. Visit our showroom today to try our Sealy lineup, and find a mattress that will make you and your guest happy.

By: BreeAnn Cook

Could there be anything harder to shop for than a mattress? Much like shopping for a car, all the important stuff is hidden “under the hood.” All those layers of foam and springs are concealed inside the mattress. At least with a car, you can peek under the hood, even if you don’t know what you’re looking at. Well, Sealy understands your frustration and they have developed a new icon system that will help you not only identify the mattress contents, but also discover key features that address your sleep needs.

Key Features Include:

– Pressure Relieving Foam that adapts to your body, relieving pressure points for personalized comfort.

–  Zoned Support for reinforcement in the center of the mattress where the heaviest part of your body needs it the most.

– Reinforced edge provides a durable sitting surface and extended sleeping surface.

– Climate control features like moisture wicking fabric and cool to the touch technology helps keep you dry and comfortable.

– Clean technology protects the mattress from common allergens, such as mite dander.

– Adjustable base compatible means that its specifically designed to work with adjustable bases.

– Posturepedic Technology is exclusive to Sealy and provides reinforced support in the mattress quilt area with additional foam.

We are adding the new Sealy mattress Conform and Response line up to our bedding gallery, and we invite you to come give them a try. Be sure to check out the icon located on the end of each bed, highlighting the key features that will help you rest better, and make your mattress shopping experience easier.

Cool new finds from the High Point Furniture Market

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

The High Point Furniture Market is the showplace for manufacturers to debut their latest and greatest in new products. Since technology has become an integral part of our lives, manufacturers seek new ways to impress us with their tech tools. Let’s talk about some of the hot new features.

Southern Motion introduced us to the articulating headrest that provides perfect neck support while optimizing the television viewing angle. They also gave us full power recliners and a built in USB port for charging our devices while we relax. Now, they are offering an app that controls your recliner. What???? Well since you already have your cell phone handy, why not use it to recline your chair. The app also allows you to set your favorite chair position with memory settings.

If you own an IMG Comfort Relaxer, you already know that they are extremely comfortable. They swivel, glide, recline and have an adjustable headrest, all without taking up much space. They are also available in both power and manual models. Now, IMG has added a power headrest and power lumbar support option. So, instead of a single motor to recline the relaxer, there are now three motors, one for each function. This option is currently available on the Chelsea model only, but should be available on more models soon.

You may remember our blog post a few months ago on the health benefits of a standing desk. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Now, you can have a desk that adjusts to your desired height at the touch of a button. Gat Creek introduced the Sullivan lift desk that transitions from a seated height to standing height with ease. It can move from a minimum 28” height to a maximum 47” height, and can carry up to 165 pounds of office equipment. It also features programmable memory buttons allowing you to adjust to four different height preferences. It comes in two lengths, 48” and 60”, and is available in a variety of finishes on Ash, Cherry or Maple. Watch their video here.

These are just a few on the new introductions that you can expect to see on our showroom floor in a few months. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, so you can be one of the first to know when the new products arrive! Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

Unfortunately, we often find ourselves derailed for a multitude of reasons, bud did you know that lack of sleep could be the culprit? A good night’s rest is crucial to functioning optimally. Sleep rejuvenates the body, and refreshes the mind giving your more energy, better focus and less stress.

Do you get too hot or just struggle to get comfortable? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then your mattress may be causing you hours of vital rest.

Tossing and turning, whether by you or your partner, is typically caused by pressure points. When body your does not get proper support, circulation can be cut off causing discomfort. Your body signals the brain that it needs blood flow, and causes you to re-position, consequently waking you. A memory foam mattress can help reduce pressure points that cause you to re-position. As a bonus, it can also help with motion transfer, so you won’t feel your significant other moving either. A snoring partner can not only prevent you from falling asleep, it can wake you after you’ve fallen asleep.

Elevating the head using an adjustable base will help prevent snoring, while increasing blood flow, a win win. Lastly, if you struggle with overheating, try a Tempur-Pedic Breeze mattress that releases cooling comfort throughout the night, or add a Bedgear cooling mattress protector and pillow to your existing mattress.

Did you know an adjustable base bed could improve your health?

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

tempur-flex_elite_ergoplus_room_horiz_nov14_5x7-jpg_11_23_2016_10_44_22_amBy: BreeAnn Cook

We all know the crucial role a quality mattress plays in a good night’s rest, but did you know that your sleep and your health could be improved with an adjustable base bed? An adjustable base, also known as a lifestyle base, is a foundation system that can raise and lower the head and foot of your mattress to achieve a more ergonomic position.

This ability to customize your sleeping position has a myriad of health benefits. For starters, it allows you to adjust to the natural curvature of your spine, which can relieve back and neck pain. It also reduces tension on the muscles and joints that is caused from laying flat. Think of your body as a rubber band. When you are laying completely flat, your body is stretched tight creating tension. Just elevating your legs slightly will begin to relieve tension on your lower back that you may not even realize is there. Elevating your feet can also reduce swelling in the legs and ankles.

Elevating your head improves your breathing, and reduces the strain on your heart by promoting better blood circulation. With better breathing, comes less snoring, which means both you and your partner will sleep better. Head elevation can also help those who suffer from acid reflux.

In addition to all of the health benefits of an adjustable base, there are a few lifestyle benefits as well. If you read, work or watch television in bed you can elevate yourself to a sitting position, instead of propping with pillows. And, if you are looking to pamper yourself, some models offer heat and massage functions.

Whether you want to reap the health benefits, sleep better, or have a better view of your favorite show in bed, you owe it to yourself to test drive a lifestyle adjustable base. Visit our showroom today to learn about the options available and try one today.

Cool products to Beat the Heat

Monday, July 18th, 2016

mattress winston-salemBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

The majority of Americans complain of sleeping hot, and it results in hours of lost sleep every year. If you struggle with overheating at night, then you probably experience difficulty falling asleep, and staying asleep. Allow us to recommend some cool products to help you beat the heat.

Technology has advanced leaps and bounds when it comes to mattresses, and this includes smarter, cooler materials. Manufacturers like Sealy and Tempur-Pedic have introduced mattresses with cooling properties designed to keep you cool and comfortable promoting better sleep. The Optimum series by Sealy features gel memory foam that gives an instantly cool sensation, paired with Outlast Gold material to reduce excess heat, which means you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Tempur-Pedic has its own answer to sleeping hot, the Breeze series. The Breeze series has a cooling cover that provides an immediate cool to the touch feeling, helping you get to sleep quickly. Then a layer of Purecool comfort material, which is likened to time release medication, keeps you cooler over time, not just at first. The perforated design is extra breathable allowing heat to flow away from your body, so once you fall to sleep, the cooling features keep working, helping you stay asleep.

People often forget the important role your pillow plays in getting a good nights rest. According to Bedgear, a leader in quality bedding products, thirty percent of your sleeping comfort is attributed to your pillow. And, if you’re a hot sleeper, you probably find yourself flipping your pillow throughout the night in search of some cooling relief. Bedgear developed the Storm series pillows with heat busting comfort in mind. The pillow is made of a climate control fabric called Ver-tex which delivers a cooling sensation on contact. Speaking from experience, it feels amazing! Beyond that cool feeling, the pillow is designed to deflect heat away from your body and help regulate temperature throughout the night.

If you already have a newer mattress, but find that you are still sleeping hot, we recommend the Ver-tex performance mattress protector by Bedgear. It has an invisible liquid barrier to protect, a cushion layer that promotes air circulation to keep you cool, and cooling technology built into the fiber to offer ultimate climate control. You’re going to love how this mattress protector can make you existing mattress feel cooler.

We understand how important quality sleep is and we know we can help you sleep cooler. Come experience all of these products in our relaxing bedding gallery and learn how you can beat the heat.

Could your furniture polish be damaging your furniture?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2016

cleaning furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

When you make a major purchase like a new home or vehicle, it comes with the understanding that the investment doesn’t end there.  A certain amount of routine maintenance and furniture cleaning is required to keep your investment in top working condition.  New furniture is no exception. Much like frequent oil changes keep your vehicle purring like a kitten, routine cleaning and maintenance keeps your furniture looking newer and lasting longer.

Here are a few tips to maintain your new furniture purchase:

– Vacuum upholstery regularly.  Dirt can build up on the surface causing abrasion and soiling.
– Rotate and flip cushions frequently.  It can minimize soiling and allow cushions to wear evenly.
– Keep upholstery, whether fabric or leather, away from direct sunlight to avoid fading.
– Clean spills immediately.  It’s a good idea to keep a clean, white cloth under the seat cushion for easy access.  Start by blotting the spill first.  If further cleaning is required, refer to the manufacturer’s tag located under the cushion for the recommended cleaning code, and follow the directions for that code. Directions for specific cleaning codes can usually be found on the manufacturer’s website.

– Keep leather products a minimum of two feet away from heat sources.
– For protected leathers, dust with a dry cloth frequently. To clean, use a mild soap and water. Failure to clean can result in oil spots and dirt build up.
– Unprotected leathers, Nubuck and Suede products can not be cleaned and should be appreciated for their natural, weathered beauty.

-Routinely dust casegoods with a soft, damp cloth and wipe with the grain. Avoid using silicone based polishes that can cause build up.
– Avoid placing items that are extremely hot or cold directly on a casegood surface as this could damage the finish.
– Limit exposure to extreme heat or humid conditions
– Place protective felt pads on the base of accessories and lamps to avoid scratching the surface.
– Refrain from placing plastic or rubber items directly on the finish as it can cause discoloration.

At Bowen Town and Country, we pride ourselves on offering heirloom quality furnishings, and we know that you want your investment to last. We hope that you will find these furniture care tips helpful in maintaining your products.

Mixing it up…

Monday, December 21st, 2015

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

Remember when buying furniture was easy? You walked into a store, found a style you liked, and bought the sofa, the loveseat and even the chair and ottoman all in the same fabric. Then you bought a cocktail table, two matching end tables and topped them with a pair of lamps.  Long gone are the days of furniture suits and the matchy-matchy approach to decorating. These days, the mixing of patterns, finishes and materials has flooded the marketplace. While many are ready and willing to embrace a more eclectic style, they struggle to pull the look together.  Instead they settle for basic beige and boring brown.

Here are a few simple tips to take your look from bland to beautiful:

1. Know your options.  When ordering custom furniture, there are lots of simple changes you can make to really upgrade the look.  Contrast pillows, contrast welt, decorative tapes and trims, nail head trim, and contrasting fabric applications like just the outside back or just the inside back allow you to express your personality, and really make your furniture unique to you. On case-goods, you may have the option of multiple finishes, a variety of hardware and different levels of distressing.  Even leather can get upgraded with decorative stitching and quilting, and specialty treatments like burnishing and distressing.

2. Play with patterns and color. Since furniture tends to be a major purchase, many people shy away from mixing patterns for fear that it will clash and they will be stuck with it. The formula for mixing patterns is rather simple really. Pick three or five fabrics in similar colors and vary the scale of the patterns.  For example- a small dot, or overall pattern, mixed with a medium size stripe or geometric, then a large scale floral.  If that still seems daunting, try pairing a large geometric or floral with a single, bold pop of color.

3.  Mix media on case-goods.  Using the same finish on everything is no longer the norm. To vary your look, add a painted piece or two, mix in a few metal or glass accents. Or for something really different, try adding Lucite accents.

If you’re ready to mix it up, and make your home look and feel more exciting, visit Bowen Town and Country today! We carry multiple manufacturers with a variety of customization options, designed to allow you to express your personality, and make your home unique.

Good Sleep Matters: New Study Shows Sleep Boosts Immunity!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2015

sealyWe all know we feel better after a good night’s sleep. When we’re well rested we’re more alert, more energetic and better able to concentrate and make decisions. Overall, we just feel happier. But did you know that getting good sleep can not only make you feel better emotionally, it can also keep you physically healthy? New research has shown that during deep sleep, or slow-wave sleep, our brain works to store information. It can be memories or facts we’ve learned that day, but it also stores information about pathogens, giving the immune system the ability to recognize a pathogen similar to one it has already faced, and then counter it with the effective immune response.

This is great news, because sleep is one thing that we all love! We already knew that eating less sugar and exercising regularly keep your body healthy. Now adding sleep to that list gives us one that’s pretty easy to check off.

Of course, the key is to get a good night of healthy sleep. Almost half of Americans (48%) report they don’t get enough sleep. Luckily, at Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we have one of the keys to a good night’s sleep: A great mattress.

Being comfortable in bed is one of the best ways to ensure a good night’s sleep. When you have a mattress that supports your body the way you like, you’re more likely to fall asleep and get the deep sleep that helps with building the brain’s immune functions.

Check out some of the new features in mattresses that help keep you comfortable:

Tempur-Pedic’s new Tempur-Breeze cooling technology is made up of a three part system that wicks away moisture and dissipates heat to keep you cooler as you sleep.

Sealy Posturpedic mattresses provide the right amount of support to keep you comfortable and avoid restless nights. The trademarked Sealy Embrace technology uses encased coils that respond to the natural curves and alignment of your spine for full body support. It also helps reduce motion transfer, so you don’t wake up every time your partner moves.

Therapedic’s BackSense mattresses provide hourglass support, with more firmness at the shoulders and hips and a little less in the lumbar region.

As you can see, there are a lot of different choices when it comes to buying a good mattress. Come into Bowen Town & Country furniture today to talk with our sleep specialists, and let them find the mattress that’s right for you.
