Cool new finds from the High Point Furniture Market

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

The High Point Furniture Market is the showplace for manufacturers to debut their latest and greatest in new products. Since technology has become an integral part of our lives, manufacturers seek new ways to impress us with their tech tools. Let’s talk about some of the hot new features.

Southern Motion introduced us to the articulating headrest that provides perfect neck support while optimizing the television viewing angle. They also gave us full power recliners and a built in USB port for charging our devices while we relax. Now, they are offering an app that controls your recliner. What???? Well since you already have your cell phone handy, why not use it to recline your chair. The app also allows you to set your favorite chair position with memory settings.

If you own an IMG Comfort Relaxer, you already know that they are extremely comfortable. They swivel, glide, recline and have an adjustable headrest, all without taking up much space. They are also available in both power and manual models. Now, IMG has added a power headrest and power lumbar support option. So, instead of a single motor to recline the relaxer, there are now three motors, one for each function. This option is currently available on the Chelsea model only, but should be available on more models soon.

You may remember our blog post a few months ago on the health benefits of a standing desk. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Now, you can have a desk that adjusts to your desired height at the touch of a button. Gat Creek introduced the Sullivan lift desk that transitions from a seated height to standing height with ease. It can move from a minimum 28” height to a maximum 47” height, and can carry up to 165 pounds of office equipment. It also features programmable memory buttons allowing you to adjust to four different height preferences. It comes in two lengths, 48” and 60”, and is available in a variety of finishes on Ash, Cherry or Maple. Watch their video here.

These are just a few on the new introductions that you can expect to see on our showroom floor in a few months. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, so you can be one of the first to know when the new products arrive! Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.

The Dangers of Furniture Tip-over

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

TV tip overBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission a child dies every two weeks due to the tip-over of furniture, a television or appliance. Prevent this from happening to a child you love by educating yourself on the issue and how to prevent it.

Children are often tempted to climb on furniture in order to access something out of reach, like a toy or a light switch. Unfortunately, when they climb on a top heavy piece of furniture like a chest of drawers, the piece can tip over injuring or killing the child. Securing furniture to the wall using L-brackets or a furniture tip-over strap kit can help prevent this. Many manufacturers have started including tip-over anchoring kits with their furniture. Make sure you inspect all new furniture to see if it contains a kit, and install it following the manufacturer’s directions. If a kit is not included, they can be purchased online or in hardware stores. Remember that if a piece is long or extra top heavy, it may require two straps.

When selecting furniture for a television, make sure you are purchasing a piece that is sturdy and the appropriate size. Consoles that are too small for the TV are more unstable. Then make sure you are securing both the tv and the console to the wall. Lastly, remove items like toys or remotes, which may be a temptation to children and encourage climbing.

3 Solutions For That Unused Dining Room

hooker furniture

Hooker Furniture Corsica desk and display cabinet

By: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

On average, Americans use their dedicated dinning room two or three times a year, while the rest of the year it remains devoid of activity and collects dust. Let’s be honest, our lifestyles have drastically changed. We have busy schedules and we just do not have time for fancy dinner parties that require a formal dining space. Instead we have casual gatherings outdoors, or a low key cocktail party where friends congregate in the kitchen or float from room to room. The time has come to reclaim that under utilized space that is your formal dining room. Let’s turn it into something that really works for you life. Here are three great ideas …

1. An Office Space. – With more and more people working from home, telecommuting, or choosing a job that is more flexible to their lifestyle, an at home office is key. A dining table makes an excellent desk, with plenty of room to spread out. Remove all the chairs except for three. Keep one as your desk chair, and two as guest chairs. Extra chairs can be used in a guest bedroom, or as a pull up chair in your living room. Switch out your china cabinet for a credenza style filing cabinet and add a decorative memo board above it for organizing notes, or keep your china cabinet and use it for pretty book storage. Add task lighting like a desk lamp or an adjustable floor lamp as needed.

2. A Craft Room. – Who doesn’t need extra space for crafting DIY projects? A dedicated craft room keeps projects from popping up all over the house, on any surface that’s convenient. Again, a dining table is a great surface to work on, as long as it has a sturdy or distressed finish. If you don’t have a work friendly surface, add a protective pad to prevent scratches and damage. Counter height tables are ideal for working while standing up, and reduce the need to hunching over your task. A dining room buffet can provide great storage for craft supplies or add storage cubbies and open shelving above for easy access to all your craft tools. Use baskets to keep everything tidy and presentable.

3. A Game or Hobby Room. – Since casual gatherings are suitable to your lifestyle, give your dining room a laid back vibe. Forgo the formal dining table all together and opt for smaller, more lounge like furnishings. A pub table or two with barstools, or leather lounge chairs with an accent table for drinks feels more relaxed. Add in some type of game table, gaming console, or a wall mounted flat screen for entertainment. Go all out and create a full scale bar using a narrow counter height table as your counter space and a narrow storage console with floating shelves as your bar back area. Get creative and you’re guaranteed to be the go to house for pre-game parties and weekend hangouts.

Whether you still want to use your dining room for dinner parties twice a year, or you want to ditch the formality all together, we have furniture solutions to help you reclaim your space and really start living in that deserted square footage. Visit our Bowen Town and Country Showroom today for more creative ideas.

Creating a Custom Look

Thursday, September 10th, 2015

One of the great things about building your own home is that everything, from the siding on the outside to the faucets in the bathroom, is picked out by you. You end up with a home that’s exactly what you want, one that fits your lifestyle and is a reflection of your tastes, even down to the most minute detail. Wouldn’t it be great if that ability to customize didn’t stop with the construction of your home? What if you could create furniture that was unique to your own style? What would you give to be able to find furniture that enhanced the beauty of your home in a seamless way, providing comfort and functionality as well as fulfilling the design goals of your home?

Designing your own furniture is easier than you think. And you don’t have to be a carpenter to do it. Check out the options from these Daniel’s Amish and Gat Creek, two of our featured brands that have customization options.

Daniel’s Amish

The numbers alone are a sign that this furniture maker means business when they say you can create a customized dining room suite.

* 50 finishes
* 5 wood species
* 70 hardware selections

daniel's amishThe combinations are seemingly endless! The best part is there is a new feature on the Daniel’s Amish website that allows you to create your own dining room table and chairs in real time. For example, if you’re wanting a dining room table, you pick out the table’s shape and, the leg style, the wood and the finish, and as you’re creating your table you get to see it in real time. It’s a great way to try some new things and find out what look is right for you.

Gat Creek

With their D.Y.O. Table Program, Gat Creek offers customers the ability to design their own table from a variety of different styles and choices. Three types of tables, more formal dining tables, everyday tables and hand-planed tables, can be customized with different woods, paints and details. Choose from:

* 34 paint options
* 3 types of wood with 4-5 finishes each
* 13 different styles of legs

For companies like Daniel’s Amish and Gat Creek, both of which produce high-quality, handmade furniture right here in the United States, being able to customize furniture for their customers is something they take great pride in. Both of these companies work with talented craftsmen, who create a piece of furniture from start to finish, rather than just working on a factory line where all they see during the day are table legs or dresser drawers. This means that it’s just as easy to make a dining room table to unique specifications as it is to make every table the same.

Check out the options available and play around with your own designs, and then bring your ideas in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture. Our talented staff can help ensure you’ve got the right look for your home and place your order with ease.

Upgrade Your Entertainment Center

50441s50Here at Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we’re big fans of family movie night. No matter what age your kids are, it’s always fun to pick out a movie the entire family will enjoy, pop a couple of bags of microwave popcorn and settle down in front of the TV for a fun night at home. It’s even better when you’ve got a great TV to watch the movie on. We’ve compiled a few things to keep in mind when purchasing your next TV to make sure you get one that’s right for you and your family.

Know what type is best for you. There are basically three types of TVs on the market now: plasma, LCD and LED. Plasma TVs are on their way out, being replaced by 4K TVs. But most advice on the Internet right now says it’s a little too early to worry about a 4K TV right now. The difference between that and LED isn’t great, and they’re pretty expensive. Which makes now a great time to purchase a plasma TV, before they’re obsolete. Plasma TVs provide good quality viewing, and they’re good for big spaces, but the one drawback is the picture isn’t the brightest, which makes it better when used in a dark room. LCD and LED TVs (an LCD TV backlit with and LED light) are both more energy efficient than plasma TVs, but be aware of limited viewing areas, as the picture can get fuzzy when you’re not right in front of the TV.

Look at the input availability. Before you go out shopping, make sure you know how many HDMI and Analog inputs you will need. And add a couple extra for good measure.

Bigger really is better. Experts recommend at least 60 inches or larger for a living room TV set. Of course, budget will play a factor, but a big screen is better for getting a good view of what’s going on.

Once you’ve got the TV, now you need the perfect furniture to put it on. And we’re here to help! Come in to Bowen Town & Country Furniture, where we have a variety of American-made, Vaughan-Bassett entertainment centers to choose from. Find the color and style that fits your home, and next time it’s family movie night, you’ll be ready!

Amish Traditions: A Hard Working, Talented People

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

amish furnitureDriving through Amish country, whether it’s in the populated Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, or the less dense areas of Ohio and Indiana, you almost feel like you’ve taken a time machine into the past about 200 years. The sturdy, white clapboard farmhouses are almost identical, with well-kept kitchen gardens in the side yard, and a clothesline full of handmade dresses and pants hanging out to dry on the other side of the yard. Work in the field is done with horse-drawn plows, and most families are relatively self-sufficient, with cows, pigs and chickens providing meat, milk and eggs.

The time machine feeling doesn’t just apply to the things you can see. The Amish people are known for a strong work ethic, as well as talented craftsmanship. Their beautiful quilts and sturdy, functional furniture have become well known for their artistic flair, but these products were born of necessity. For years, young men have worked as apprentices with experienced furniture and cabinet makers to learn the craft, to make products for their own communities but also to sell to help bring in income to the Amish community, to pay for the things they need that they can’t provide for themselves.

It is this dedication to hard work and creating superior products that appeals to us at Bowen Town & Country Furniture. We also appreciate hard work, and the beautiful craftsmanship that comes from items made with years of practice and knowledge of the trade. That’s why we’re proud to carry lines such as Daniel’s Amish and Palettes by Winesburg in our store. Both of these companies create furniture that fits well in the décor of almost any home, and the sturdy craftsmanship can hold up to any wear and tear your family might put on the furniture.

And of course, Daniel’s Amish and Palettes by Winesburg are proud to be American Made, making their furniture from wood harvested right here in America, and employing craftsmen who are honored to be passing on a tradition of furniture-making to the next generation.

Stop by Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to see for yourself the high-quality of these Amish-made products. You might even find yourself imaging a hay field being plowed by a young man on a horse, wearing a black shirt and black hat. There’s just something peaceful and comforting about Amish Country.

Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.
