The Art of Upholstery…a labor of love.

Tuesday, March 28th, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

Recently, I had the opportunity to tour the C.R.Laine upholstery manufacturing plant in Hickory, North Carolina. I’ve sold furniture for years and I’m familiar with quality construction, but what I saw and learned during my visit had me asking “How can they sell it for so little?”

The entire experience was a complete delight. I joined a group of other designers and retailers from across the US to get an inside look at what makes C.R.Laine different. It is amazing the time and effort that goes into a single piece of furniture. The tour began in product development and planning, where conceptual drawings are created using a CAD program. The drawings are tweaked and optimized before being sent to pattern development, where patterns are created based on the drawings. The patterns are used to cut out the individual components of a piece of upholstery, such as an arm panel, a back panel or seat cushion. Each piece requires a pattern. Before cutting, the pattern must be laid out on the fabric to determine print placement. Once fabric layout is determined, it proceeds to cutting. During this time, the frame is also being prepared for upholstery. It starts with frame assembly, then moves on to finishing. After the frame is finished (stained or painted), the springs, webbing, and other support components are added. Back on the other side of the plant, the fabric cutting is complete, and the process has moved on to sewing. Each cushion and pillow casing is sewn, adding the welts, decorative trims and zippers. Now the fabric and frame come together in the upholstery department, where skilled artisans have spent years cultivating their craft. It was evident that this is not something one just picks up over night. It takes time to learn how to fold and tuck the fabric in such a way that it “flattering” to the piece. One must pay careful attention to make certain that the fabric is applied symmetrically, not pulled too tightly, so as to skew the pattern. Tufting is particularly challenging, and we learned that a single tufted ottoman can take two hours or more just to tuft properly. This doesn’t include the time spent in framing, sewing, finishing, etc… Once a piece is complete, it’s inspected for quality workmanship, and if approved, moves on steaming/pressing, then packing and shipping. The average piece of furniture leaving the C.R.Laine factory has been touched by at least seven, most likely more, individuals who take great pride in the products they produce. Every piece has a tag that reads “We are proud to put our signature on the work that we have crafted for you” and it is signed by each worker that helped create that piece of furniture along the way.

During the short two days spent with C.R.Laine team, I witnessed such passion. They were excited about their products, their leathers, their fabrics and their devotion to quality. They could make cheaper; they could use less foam, less springs and support, lower quality materials, and inferior construction methods, but they choose not to. That is what makes C.R.Laine different.

We are proud to carry their quality products, and we know that you will be proud to own it. Visit our showroom today to see it and try it for yourself. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

We’re seeing spots!

Spots…the hottest pattern in home fashion right now, and we are seeing them everywhere. Less uniform than a polka dot, more graphic than the traditional animal print; this new pattern is fun and fresh. It’s the perfect way to add some whimsy to your spring palette.

So, how do you embrace the trend? Well, the good news is, much a like an animal print, the spotted print plays well with all design styles.  For traditional interiors, pair it with a bright pop of color.  Maybe purchase a yard or two to recover the seat of a wooden frame chair. In a more contemporary space, it looks amazing when used with a metallic finish, like gold. Think accent ottoman with a metal base. For the eclectic enthusiast, mix it with a flashy floral.  If you’re really feeling bold, go for a fully upholstered daybed size bench or chaise.  Feeling a little more timid; limit to something small like pillows, artwork, or even just a lampshade. Whether big or small, this pattern is destined to be noticed.

Visit our showroom today to see all the fun fabric options. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

Furniture That Can Handle Life!

Thursday, July 9th, 2015

bowenFor years houses have had living rooms, but these days we take that name seriously. We do a lot of living on the furniture in that room, taking naps in the recliner, eating dinner on the couch while watching Family Feud, and enjoying countless family movie nights where everyone piles up on the couch, hugging pillows and spilling popcorn everywhere. And there’s nothing like the summer time for some really hard wear on the furniture. Kids come home from the pool in dripping wet bathing suits and sit down to watch a cartoon, not even thinking about the wet spot they will leave. Not to mention the dogs, coming in from a romp after an afternoon thunderstorm and rubbing their wet, muddy hair up against the upholstery.

Thank goodness today’s fabrics are made with innovative technology and durable fibers to stand up to most of the wear and tear we can dish out. The days of protecting furniture with plastic slipcovers that stick to your sweaty legs are gone, and thank goodness. Almost any furniture you might have in your house is protected with some type of stain resistant technology, making it easy to wipe up most spills with a damp cloth.

Stain-resistant upholstery has been around for while now, but there are even newer innovations in textiles that have made some new types of upholstery tougher, more durable and even more stain resistant than the fabrics made just a few years ago.

Crypton, a company out of Michigan with a manufacturing plant in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, offers a wide variety of fabrics for the home, all coated with its special formula and processed at high temperatures to activate the formula for maximum oil and water repllancy. The final result is a fabric that is both stain and odor resistant, making it perfect for a home where kids and dogs love to make themselves comfortable on the couch.

Sunbrella is another company making durable upholstery fabric, also made in North Carolina. The company started out making fabrics for boat and marine use, fabric that could stand up to the moisture and wear of life out on the water. It turns out the durable, mold and stain resistant fabric was also in demand for household use and the company quickly expanded. Today Sunbrella fabrics can be used all through the house, from upholstery to drapes to pillows and throws.

At Bowen Town & Country Furniture, we are proud to offer Sunbrella and Crypton fabrics for most of our lines of furniture. Come in today to view the fabulous choices available, and maybe you’ll even choose to purchase a piece of furniture that will stand up to anything your family can dish out. Next time you come in from the pool, you won’t have to tell the kids to get off the couch!

Four Seasons: Bringing Slipcovers into the 21st Century

Thursday, February 26th, 2015

Sewing20Machine20LegacyWhen you think of slipcovers, often the first thing that comes to mind are plastic covers used by our grandmother’s generation. Sometimes you might even find someone who invested in a custom-made slipcover, but the intent was the same: to protect the expensive upholstered furniture from sweat and other stains. As furniture became more affordable, the use of slipcovers began to subside, but today we are seeing a resurgence, and for a completely different reason.

“These days, our whole culture has a more casual feel, from what we wear to work to the shabby chic style of our homes,” said Chris Cogan, director of operations for Four Seasons Casual Custom Furniture. “Slipcovers lend themselves to that casual feel.”

Chris is proud to be part of a family-owned company that manufactures furniture right here in our home state of North Carolina. It all started when his father-in-law struggled with putting a slipcover on a couch of a house where he was a guest. “He thought there had to be a better way, so he teamed up with a friend and created one,” Chris said.

That led to the creation of Four Season in 1999, and the company is still going strong today, with about 150 employees at its Seagrove, N.C. headquarters. “We’re proud to be a small, family business that can provide jobs to the local community,” Chris said. What makes furniture from Four Seasons unique is its four-piece, removable cover. Instead of struggling with one big piece of material, these slipcovers are made up of the arms, the cover, the outside back and the skirt. It makes it a lot easier to remove for cleaning or even just to change the look of a room.

While the slipcover is what’s seen, the quality starts from within with a hardwood frame, with all joints interlocked, glued and reinforced. The quality of the furniture from Four Seasons led loyal customers to ask for traditional upholstered furniture as well, so today the line has expanded to include sofas and chairs in both slipcovered and upholstered options.

If you’ve been considering a new sofa, come into Bowen Town & Country Furniture today to take a look at some of the samples from Four Seasons. You’ll never even guess you’re looking at a slipcover! The high-quality slipcovers provide a tailored look while maintaining a casual charm.
