What sets Smith Brothers furniture apart?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

smith brothersBy BreeAnn Cook:

Even though I’ve sold furniture for years and understand quality, there were a few stand out things during the factory tour that really set Smith Brothers apart.

Fabric vendors provide fabric performance ratings to manufacturers, but Smith Brothers has found it crucial to do their own in-house testing. They do not just take the mill’s word for it, they test each fabric added to their fabric offering for abrasion and durability. They rate it one through five, and if they find the fabric has significant abrasion or piling issues, it doesn’t make the cut. This also helps the company determine which fabrics are sturdy enough for use on recliners. In addition to abrasion testing, they also test for seam slippage using a weighted wheel which is dropped on either side of a seem over and over. After five hundred times, they check to see if the fabric shows pulling at the seams. If a fabric shows slippage, then they will reinforce the seams by adding a bead of glue along the seam line.

Smith Bros. uses a pre-engineered heavy gauge spring coil unit under each seat cushion, providing independent suspension for each person on a sofa. The front edge on the unit is bent upward, except where prohibited such as curved shapes. This provides extra support and durability at the front end of the cushion, a high stress point. What I did not realize is that the entire coil unit is dipped into a protective coating to prevent squeaking over time.
Seat cushions feature a 2.5 density Qualux foam that holds its resiliency better over time, and back cushions are filled with fiber blown into chambers to reduce settling and sagging.

Smith Brothers constantly reevaluates its products and processes to make sure they are producing the best quality product for the end consumer. It may not be the most cost-effective way to do business, but their dedication has paid off. By the end of this year they will complete a large expansion that will allow them to ramp up production, including an ample staging area to streamline the shipping process. Speaking of shipping, did I mention that they deliver to our warehouse on their own trucks? These are custom built trucks with special shelving, so they never ship a sofa on end potentially damaging the arms.

Smith Brothers produces quality from start to finish. The workers take pride in making it, which makes us proud to sell it, and will make you proud to own it. Visit our Winston Salem showroom today to see and experience the difference for yourself.

The right performance fabrics for your lifestyle

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018

bowenBy BreeAnn Cook:

By now we’re sure you have heard about performance fabrics that are engineered to be resistant to stains, repel water, resist fading and so on. But, did  you know that not all performance fabrics are created equal? Since these family friendly fabrics burst onto the market a few years ago, they have been growing in popularity. Now there are several companies that make these types of fabrics and almost every manufacturer carries them. With so many options, it’s hard to know which is right for you and your family. Here is a breakdown on the different options and how they might improve your lifestyle.

If you have an active family, then you need a performance fabric that is durable and resists stains. The great news is that most all brands of  performance fabrics have these properties. Consider Crypton, Sunbrella, Revolution, WearProof, WearProof Plus, Sustain, or Resilience TX.

If you like to entertain and have messy friend or family then consider Crypton, Sunbrella, and WearProof Plus for spill repellency. Liquids will bead up on the fabric surface instead of permeating the cloth.

Have pets? Both Crypton and WearProof Plus resists odors, so you don’t have to worry if Fluffy and Fido join you on the sofa.

Need something for an extra sunny space? Sunbrella is UV and fade resistance making them ideal for sunrooms and other spaces with lots of natural light.

Extreme living requires extreme cleaning capabilities. Most performance fabrics can be cleaned with mild soap and water, but some can be cleaned with a bleach solution. Sunbrella, Sustain and Revolution are all solution dyed fabrics meaning that the color is an inherent part of the fibers making them color fast.

If you want something that is eco-friendly, then consider Sustain or Crypton. Both are members of the Sustainable Furniture Council. Crypton is GreenGuard Certified and Sustain is PFC free.

Whether you want to host friends for a wine tasting, curl up with your furry friend, or fend off the sun’s harmful rays there is a performance fabric suitable for your lifestyle. Visit our showroom today to see the many offerings of performance fabrics and let us help you find the right choice for your family.

Scrimmage is the newest collection of kid’s furniture from Smartstuff by Universal. Simple, clean lines and a neutral weathered gray finish makes for a transitional group that works great for boys or girls.

Cool metal accents and oil rubbed bronze hardware give it stylish, timeless appeal that grows with your child from grade school to their first apartment; While English dovetail drawer construction, 9/16” drawer walls, bolt in bed rails, and plywood slat rolls means it is built to last too. Vaughan-Bassett partners with hosts of HGTV’s “Home Town”

Tuesday, May 8th, 2018

bowenVaughan-Bassett Furniture Company announced at the Spring 2018 High Point Furniture Market that they will partner with Ben and Erin Napier, the hosts of HGTV’s hit show, “Home Town” to create multiple casegood collections.

As fans of the show “Home Town” already know, the Napiers are dedicated to revitalizing their own home town of Laurel, Mississippi by remodeling homes and breathing life back into the neighborhood. Ben has a workshop where he creates his own furniture designs and Erin uses her designer expertise to pull their remodel projects together. Their dedication even extends to their store, Laurel Mercantile, where they feature products made in the USA. Since the success of their show, multiple companies expressed interest in creating a furniture line for them, but the Napiers really wanted to partner with an American-made manufacturer that shared their vision for supporting American workers. Vaughan-Bassett was a natural partnership, as they are known for fighting to keep furniture production in their home town of Galax, Virginia when other companies were cutting cost by moving production overseas.

The new collections will feature both solid wood and veneered case goods and will debut at the Fall Furniture Market. Stay tuned for details!

Can’t wait until the Fall for new American-made bedroom or dining furniture? Shop our Vaughan-Bassett collection now HERE.

Staff Pick Series: Holly’s Pick

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

bowen furnitureWe see furniture day in and day out. We’ve seen styles come and go, and then come around again in a new way. With all that change, it can be challenging to pick a favorite, but we do tend to have pieces that we fancy more than others. We thought it would be fun to share each of our staff’s favorite picks and why.

Holly’s Employee pick…

If you’ve had the opportunity to meet our newest team member, Holly, then you know she has a vivacious personality. So, it comes as no surprise that her employee pick is a chair that truly allows her to express her individual taste. The Bradstreet chair by C.R.Laine has classic appeal, that can take on a bold twist when upholstered in one of the many fashion forward fabric options in the line.

Pair that with any custom matched Benjamin Moore paint color of your choice, and finish the look with custom trim options like nail-head, contrast fabric or decorative banding, for a look that is uniquely you. Not only does the Bradstreet chair make a killer style statement, it’s also incredibly comfortable. What’s not to love? Check it out HERE, or visit our showroom to see the fabric selections.

Staff Pick Series: Garry Christ’s Pick

furniture winston salemStaff Pick Series

We see furniture day in and day out. We’ve seen styles come and go, and then come around again in a new way. With all that change, it can be challenging to pick a favorite, but we do tend to have pieces that we fancy more than others. We thought it would be fun to share each of our staff’s favorite picks and why.

Garry Crist’s employee pick

Comfort and value are two things that rank highly on Garry’s list. That why his employee pick is the Dalton Sofa with chaise from Rowe furniture. This particular sofa chaise combo offers the functionality of a small sectional with the flexibility of a standard sofa.

Unlike most sectionals, it features an independent storage ottoman, and a separate chaise cushion, so the chaise portion can be flipped from the right hand of the sofa to the left. It also comes with an extra seat cushion allowing it to be used as just a sofa. What this means for you is no fear of commitment that comes with a typical sectional, where you are forced to choose between a left or right-hand chaise, limiting your furniture layout possibilities.

With hundreds of fabric options, and pricing starting at just $1500, this sofa chaise combo is an incredible value. And Garry knows first hand how comfortable it is to stretch out on, since both of his children own one. You really can’t get a better testimonial than that!

Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.

With all that change, it can be challenging to pick a favorite, but we do tend to have pieces that we fancy more than others. Steve Rice’s employee pick

With 30 years of experience in furniture, salesman, Steve Rice knows how to recognize quality craftsmanship. Which is exactly why he selected the New England Cabinet from Palettes by Winesburg as his employee pick.

This solid cherry cabinet features simple yet elegant lines that make it a classic addition to any room, not just a dining room. It’s unique combination of glass and wood panel doors allow for both display and hidden storage.

It also features accent lighting that is activated by a simple touch of the hinge, so you can highlight your decorative items displayed in the glass portion. Michaels finish on Cherry is a favorite combination, but this cabinet can be custom ordered in maple, cherry, or oak in a variety of finishes.

What to consider when buying a guest room mattress?

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

bowen furniture

By: BreeAnn Cook

Let’s be honest…shopping for a mattress doesn’t rank highly on most people’s list of fun things to do. In fact, it is probably one of your the least favorite things. Considering that most of us are not planning to sleep on it, we probably do not put much time or effort into selecting a guest room mattress. However, if you’ve ever spent the night at a family member or friend’s house, and experienced a bad mattress, you may think twice before making that purchase. Here are a few things to consider when buying a mattress for a guest space.

1. Who will be using the mattress? If you host mostly couples, consider mattresses with encased coil technology. Encased coils reduce motion transfer, helping to eliminate partner interruption, which is one of the main causes of sleep loss. Memory foam mattresses also absorb motion transfer. Will you be hosting mostly younger guests, like grandchildren? Don’t assume that just because they are young the mattress isn’t important. Growing children require more sleep than adults, and a quality mattress will help them get a better night’s sleep.

2. How frequently will the mattress be used? If a guest room gets used once or twice a year, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest option possible. Unfortunately, this can be a bad move for both you and your occasional guests. What if your aging parent goes from a twice a year guest to a long-term guest, or you find yourself sleeping in the guest room while your spouse is sick? Suddenly, you regret buying that $299 mattress. Make sure to select a mattress that you would enjoy sleeping on for more than a night. That doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive, but it should offer adequate support and be comfortable.

3. Memory foam versus Innerspring? Sealy really explains it best when describing their new Response and Conform line. The Response line is an innerspring style mattress offering support that “holds” you, while the Conform line is a memory foam style mattress offering support that “hugs” you. If you can’t decide, go with a Hybrid model that offers the best of both worlds.

Whether it’s for a few nights or a few months, you want your guests to be comfortable. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, or a small fortunate to get a good quality mattress, but you do have to be willing to educate yourself on the options and try a few models. Visit our showroom today to try our Sealy lineup, and find a mattress that will make you and your guest happy.

Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360, info@bowenfurniture.com.
