Before you buy, consider this…

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017

By BreeAnn Cook

We’ve all bought something before that just didn’t turn out like we thought it would. You found the perfect fabric and the perfect chair, but when it arrived, it was NOT so perfect. Maybe the fabric didn’t pair up like you dreamed? It happens, so here are a few things to consider when selecting a fabric for your furniture.

First, consider scale. As a general rule, it’s best to use small scaled patterns on smaller pieces of furniture, and large scale on larger items. For example: a huge floral print looks fantastic when you can center the floral motif on the back of an ample lounge chair; however, that same big pattern will loose its impact on a small pull up chair. In the same token, a large pattern can be overwhelming on an entire sofa or sectional.

Next, consider shapes and contours. When you have a curvy or shaped piece, fabric application is very important. On a curved inside back, there will be wrinkles, because it is almost impossible to get the fabric smoothed on a curve. On solids it may not be a concern, but on patterns, these wrinkles can cause distorting. Same goes with tufting. Patterns can be greatly altered by tufting, which is why stripes and tufting do not mix well. Stripes and plaids do not work well on curved pieces either. Plaids in general are particularly tricky, because they have lines running in both directions, making them extra challenging to line up and match. Save stripes and plaids for frames that are simple and clean lined.

Lastly, consider the fabric content for the application. Linens are light and luxurious, but are prone to wrinkling. Cottons can wrinkle and crease too. If this bothers you, then use them sparingly and wisely. They are great on pillows, items with tight backs and seats, and smaller cushions. Wrinkles will be more prominent on larger or longer cushions, often referred to as comfort wrinkles. This is also true on down cushions, which also have those cozy comfort wrinkles.

Don’t be afraid to have fun with fabric. If you love it, embrace it. Just give the application some serious thought first. When in doubt, try our online draping tool for Kincaid, Rowe, and Robin Bruce. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

How To Make Sure Your Furniture Will Fit

Tuesday, January 17th, 2017

bowen room plannerBy: BreeAnn Cook

Perhaps one of the top concerns consumers have about buying new furniture is getting the wrong size. Whether it’s too big or too small, nobody wants to make a major purchase only to discover at delivery that it just will not fit. We have a new tool to help you put your fears at ease. The Room Planner tool on allows you to draw a room to scale and place furniture selections without any heavy lifting.

Here’s how it works:

1. Measure your room, noting the dimensions of any architectural features like windows and doors.

2. Go to our website and click on the Room Planner tool, located on the top left tool bar or at the bottom of the home page. Click “Start Planning”.

3. Select the room shape that best matches your room. Don’t worry if there’s not an exact match. You can tweak wall length and angles later. Enter the over all width and length of your space, and the planner will automatically generate the room.

4. Next, add your architectural features. You can select from the tool bar on the right. Under the generic tab, select “architectural” from the drop down menu. You have a variety of features to choose from like windows, doors, fireplaces, etc… Drag and drop your selected feature onto the wall where you would like it placed. Tweak the placement along the wall by dragging the item left, right, up or down. Use the background grid as a guide for proper spacing, and confirm placement using the measure tool (ruler icon at top). Change the size of an element by clicking the “i” icon, and entering the dimensions in inches.

5. Once you have your architectural features in place, you can begin placing furniture. You can search for product using the search tool on the left. Search by manufacturer, collection, or by item. To search for a sofa, click the “products” tab, select “type” from the drop down menu, and then select “sofa” from the drop down menu. Scroll to find a sofa style you like, then drag and drop it into your room. You can also search for items by manufacturer, but it is helpful to know the specific item or collection name. If you have not made specific selections yet, you can use basic templates from the “generic” tab.

6. Once you have selected your furnishings, you can move them around the floor plan by clicking and dragging them. Use the “rotate” tool to rotate the angle of an item. If you just click the rotate tool, it will rotate the item 90 degrees. If you click and hold, you can rotate the item to any angle while moving the mouse.

7. Remember to build your furniture placement around the focal point, placing your largest items first. Leave at least three feet of space for major walkways, and don’t forget to allow space to move around within the furniture grouping. Eighteen inches is needed between a sofa and cocktail table, and allow three feet from the edge of dining table and the wall for sliding out chairs.

8. Once your plan is complete, you can save it by creating a log in. Not only will this keep all of your plans in one place, but it will also allow you to save multiple versions of a single plan. When you print your plan, it will also include a list of the products used within the plan, making shopping a breeze. Before making a purchase, make sure to measure door and stairwell openings, and note any sharp or difficult turns leading into the room where the furniture will go. Remember, just because it will fit in the room, doesn’t mean it can get there.

Give our new Room Planner a try today and take the guess work out of furniture shopping. Questions? Give us a call, or email us for more information at 336-765-1360,

Five Benefits Of A Standing Desk

Thursday, November 10th, 2016

desksBy: BreeAnn Cook

Long term sitting has been linked to a myriad of health issues, but what if you could reduce your risk just by changing your desk? Researchers like Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic have conducted multiple studies on the effects of long term sitting, and the simple changes that can help reduce your risk for major health issues. On average, Americans sit six to seven hours a day, add that to the average eight hours of sleep and it equates to a pretty sedentary lifestyle. Standing more during normal activities like day to day work can have great benefits. Here are five reasons to consider a standing desk:

1. Burn more calories. Standing burns 50 more calories per hour than sitting. Although this won’t replace your workout, it can really add up over a week’s time. Standing for just three hours a day for seven days equals over 1,000 additional calories burned.

2. Reduce Cancer Risk. Both colon cancer and breast cancer have been linked to prolonged sitting. Standing more can help reduce your risk.

3. Reduce Back and Neck Pain. Whether it’s a desk chair with improper back support, bad posture or slumping over your keyboard, those who sit for prolonged periods of time during work often complain of back and neck issues. Studies show that standing while working increases blood flow and improves posture. Study participants reported having less back and neck pain as a result.

4. Lower your risk for hear disease. Obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels are all contributors to heart disease. They have become known collectively as “sitting disease”, and all can be reduced by standing more.

5. Improve mood and energy levels. I think we can all admit that we get tired at work, be it staring at a screen or just concentrating too hard. Standing for periods of time throughout the day can not only break the monotony, but it can actual increase your energy through added blood flow, which can in turn boost your mood.

If all of these benefits have you ready to take a stand, but you’re concerned about the transition from sitting all day, Hooker furniture has offered an ingenious solution with their Curata sit/stand desk. It is a multi level desk that gives you the flexibility of sitting or standing with ample work space. Check this and other standing desk options out on our website HERE.

Commercial and hospitality organizations have trusted Crypton for over twenty years to deliver stain resistance and durability to their high traffic environments, and now you can too, with Crypton Home Fabric. One can’t help but notice how similar the name “Crypton” is to Kryptonite, so what is it and why is it so great? Well, it’s a coating applied to fabric through a submersion process and then heat set, so it is permanently bonded to the fabric; resulting in the ultimate performance fabric. Crypton creates a barrier that repels spills, stains and moisture, won’t trap odors, and resists microbials. Spills literally bead up on the surface. It’s durable with enhanced abrasion resistance and it cleans up with just mild soap and water.

Unlike other protective coatings, it will last the life of the fabric and will not wear or wash away. If your still not convinced that Crypton deserves a superhero mask and cape, here are a few more reasons to love it.

The Dangers of Furniture Tip-over

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

TV tip overBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission a child dies every two weeks due to the tip-over of furniture, a television or appliance. Prevent this from happening to a child you love by educating yourself on the issue and how to prevent it.

Children are often tempted to climb on furniture in order to access something out of reach, like a toy or a light switch. Unfortunately, when they climb on a top heavy piece of furniture like a chest of drawers, the piece can tip over injuring or killing the child. Securing furniture to the wall using L-brackets or a furniture tip-over strap kit can help prevent this. Many manufacturers have started including tip-over anchoring kits with their furniture. Make sure you inspect all new furniture to see if it contains a kit, and install it following the manufacturer’s directions. If a kit is not included, they can be purchased online or in hardware stores. Remember that if a piece is long or extra top heavy, it may require two straps.

When selecting furniture for a television, make sure you are purchasing a piece that is sturdy and the appropriate size. Consoles that are too small for the TV are more unstable. Then make sure you are securing both the tv and the console to the wall. Lastly, remove items like toys or remotes, which may be a temptation to children and encourage climbing.

Dorm Room Essentials

Sunday, August 14th, 2016

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

In just a few short weeks, students will be headed back to school, and for college students that involves trying to squeeze your entire life into one tiny dorm room. Basically, every dorm room needs these three essential things:

1. A comfortable place to sleep. Getting a good nights rest will do wonders for your student’s academics, and that all starts with a good mattress. If you’re looking for a balance between quality and price, we recommend the Bay Island memory foam mattress by Sealy. It has a comfort layer of memory foam that cradles you and inner support core that conforms to your body and provides proper alignment. Best of all, it starts at just $499 for a twin. Don’t forget that approximately 30% of your sleeping comfort can be attributed to your pillow. Get your “A” student a BG-X All Position pillow from Bedgear, designed to support all types of sleepers whether back, side or stomach.

2. A dedicated work space. Whether they like it or not, there will be homework, but having a space set aside for work will help them focus. Squeezing a desk into an already small space is a challenge; so look for smaller scale pieces that could double as a work surface, like a narrow console or a rolling cart that can be tucked away to save floor space. “C” tables make an ideal laptop surface, and it can pull right up to the edge of your bed, no chair required. If you can, go vertical with a bunk bed system that offers desk and storage space beneath the sleeping zone like the #myroom metal loft bunk bed by Universal furniture.

3. Lots of storage. There’s just never enough room to store all their stuff. To maximize storage in a small foot print, you need to make smart furniture choices. Use a trundle under the bed to rollout storage for everything from clothes to sporting equipment. A narrow armoire can take up just as much floor space as a nightstand but it doubles your storage capabilities. Look for built in features like charging stations and reading lamps to reduce clutter on surfaces. Go vertical every chance you get, whether that means wall hooks, mounted shelves or bookcases.

The perfect kid friendly fabric

Friday, July 29th, 2016

By: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

White has been a very popular color this year, especially in upholstery. Although many of us would love to have a glorious white sofa like we see on home design shows and magazines, the reality is white shows DIRT! Gone are the days of grandma’s parlor where you were not allowed to sit on anything. This generation lives on furniture. Revolution Fabric by STI is “revolutionizing” the way we see white furniture. They have created a fabric that is resistant to stains, repels water, and can be cleaned with diluted bleach, although it usually just requires soap and water.

How is this possible? Revolution fabric is made with 100% Olefin, which is naturally stain-resistant, anti-microbial, and exceptionally durable. The olefin is solution dyed, meaning the color or pigment is added to the fiber during the liquid state, so it becomes an inherit property of the fabric. Revolution uses the analogy that “solution dyed yarn is a carrot; when you cut the carrot, it is orange all the way through. Normal packaged dyed yarn is like a radish; the color is on the outside”. Olefin differs from acrylic in that it will not pill or fuzz under normal conditions and it is 100% recyclable, with no chemical treatments. Go ahead, let the kids eat on your white sofa and don’t worry about what happens, because Revolution has you covered.

Now that you know how great, and life friendly Revolution fabric is, we know you want to see it, feel it, and try it. Visit our showroom to experience this fabric on our affordable Fusion furniture line.

What is Mid-Century Modern?

Friday, July 22nd, 2016

bowen furnitureBy: BreeAnn Cook, Interior Designer

A quick Google images search for Mid- Century Modern will give you a good glimpse of this styles characteristics and you’ve probably seen its likeness on the popular show “Mad Men”. It is an architectural and interior design style that was popular in Mid 20 th century, roughly 1940’s-1970’s, and still has strong influence today. As the name indicates, it is a modern style, strongly influenced by European styles such as Scandinavian and Danish Modern and also furniture designers such as Le Corbusier, Mies van de Rohe, Saarinen and Eames. The overall emphasis is placed on openness, with natural and organic forms, both in architecture and in furnishings.

Large windows, vaulted ceilings, and open floor plans made possible by post and beam construction are indicative of the style, which was widely popular in areas of California. Furnishings were usually minimal, and mirrored the organic forms of nature like the iconic tulip table by Saarinen. Simple, wooden frames were often used. Fabrics were heavy on texture or featured bold geometric patterns. Wallpaper was a key component with funky shapes and nature inspired motifs. Light fixtures were usually bold, stand alone pieces.

To achieve authentic Mid Century style, incorporate vintage finds; however, due to popularity, these finds come at a premium. Reproductions can be found in the market place, but since this style is strongly driven by architecture, use the style as inspiration. Bring in one or two key elements like a great accent chair or a show topping light fixture. Mid Mod plays well with other styles, and looks fantastic in juxtaposition with traditional décor. Peruse Pinterest and Elle Décor magazine for get your creative juices flowing.
